SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Hartford baseball team fell to 5-4 in the Conference of New England (CNE) on Tuesday dropping a contest to Western New England by a 8-6 final.
Rapid Recap:
- The Hawks jumped in front in the first inning as sophomore JJ Romatzick (Stratford, Conn.) scored on a double play ground out. The Golden Bears quickly responded getting two runs in the bottom of the frame on three hits. Hartford would get back in front in the third as graduate student Jake Santiago (Bristol, Conn.) launched a two-run bomb to score sophomore Alek Popovich (Rochdale, Mass.) who reached on a double earlier in the inning.
- In the bottom of the fourth Western New England got back in front scoring three runs on two hits including a RBI double to lead 5-3. The next inning had more damage for the Hawks as the Golden Bears would get four more hits and three more runs to take a 8-3 advantage. Junior Cameron Boardman (Bradford, Vt.) tried to spark a comeback getting a RBI single in the top of the sixth scoring junior Ryan Knight (Peabody, Mass.) who doubled to lead off the inning. Romatzick added a sacrifice fly to score another run as the lead was cut to 8-5. Hartford would get one final run in the top of the ninth on a fielder's choice falling by a 8-6 final.
At the Plate:
- Santiago led the offense going 3-for-5, with a homer, two RBIs and a run scored. Knight continues his hot streak going 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Popovich added a 2-for-5 game with a double and two runs scored.
On the Mound:
- Freshman Jeffrey Blake (Hopewell, N.J.) started the game going a single inning allowing two runs on three hits. Freshman Justin Gouin (North Haven, Conn.) was next tossing two innings allowing just three base runners and no runs. Freshman Michael Greco (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) picked up the loss getting a single out allowing three runs. Senior Luke Rier (Miami, Fla.) followed getting five outs while allowing two earned runs. Junior Michael Featherstone (Ramsey, N.J.) continued his stellar pitching going three shut down innings to close the game with a single strikeout.

The Hawks will head to Beverly to take on #3 Endicott College on Saturday with a 12:00 PM double header start.
