Hartford Women's Lacrosse Dominate in 19-5 Win Over Wentworth Institute of Technology

BOSTON, Mass - The Hawks women's lacrosse team secured their fifth consecutive victory with tonight's 19-5 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology this Tuesday night.

Rapid Recap:

  • Senior Megan Smith (Orange, Conn.) got the Hawks rolling early scoring a swift goal into the back of the net in the opening 45 seconds, assisted by sophomore Lauren Samela (Cheshire Conn.) Smith followed her first goal with her second capitalizing on a free position attempt and scoring consecutively. Next, to score was sophomore Madison Olmstead (Wolcott, Conn.) who trailed Smith's goal by 35 seconds, drilling the ball into the top right with an assist by junior Courtney Ingham (Bedford, N.H.), Hawks at an early comfortable lead 3-0 at 11:22 remaining in the first. The Hawks maintained pressure over the Leopards and freshman Kate Zonin (North Smithfield, R.I.)  got in on the scoring action at 10:21 with a goal of her own converting on a free position attempt, 4-0. Zonin was not done there, she then snuck around a few defenders to slam another goal into the back of the net within a minute of her first goal, this time on a man-up opportunity. The Hawks forced the Leopards to reconvene at a time-out as the Hawks stunned the team with a dominating offensive performance. Quickly after the huddle; sophomore Katie Graham (Colchester, Conn. brought one home and scored with an assist from Olmstead, Hawks cushioning their lead to 6-0. The Hawks closed out the first with three more goals from Olmstead (2) and Ingham, up 9-0 over the Leopards.
  • In the opening 22 seconds of the second Samela scores off a perfect assist by Zonin to continue this powerful tone to open the quarter. Zonin was on fire tonight connecting yet again two more back-to-back goals within a few minutes of each other, Hawks up now 12-0. Junior Kelly Hoxie (Nassau, N.Y.) matches Zonin's back-to-backs with a pair of goals herself both within 43 seconds of each other. The Hawks were dominating this field in all aspects both offensively and defensively not letting the Leopards get a hold of this game. With 3:13 remaining in the first half the Leopards were able to get on the scoreboard with Anna Farberlle sinking in a goal. Shortly after, freshman Brenna Slattery (Wilbraham, Mass.) closed out the second quarter with a powerful goal assisted by junior Caitlin Welch (West Haven, Conn.) Hawks finish off the first half up an impressive 15-1.
  • The Leopards opened the scoring in the second half with a goal by Shayleah Gunning-Lav to try and catch the flying heels of the Hawks. The Hawks maintained control of the ball and were more decisive with their offensive plays this third quarter, still forcing key turnovers and holding strong defensively. Freshman Jaleen Ruiz (Goshen, N.Y.) knocked in the 16th goal for the Hawks with 4:58 remaining. The Leopards finished off this third quarter bringing in a goal by Tessa Wilkie in an attempt to bring down the differential for a more promising fourth quarter now trailing 16-3.
  • The Leopards increased their pressure in this final quarter taking quick early shots at the Hawks' goalie freshman Nora Miller (Ellington, Conn.) but she held strong making three key saves within a 60-second burst. Ingham and Welch continued to extend the Hawks lead, answering on a man-up opportunity for Ingham and a commanding goal by Welch assisted by Graham at 9:49, 18-3. The Leopards snuck in two back-to-back goals by the Hawks with under seven minutes to go as they capitalized on a man-up opportunity of their own as senior Madison Carangelo (Vernon, Conn.) was penalized with a yellow card. Hoxie closed out this game with a final goal with an assist from Ruiz. Hawks take this win home with a final score 19-5 over the Leopards.

Post Game Press: 

"We came out disciplined and strong," said freshman Kate Zonin (North Smithfield, R.I.), "and finished off our win with just as much strength and it was a great win!"

Inside The Numbers:

  • Zonin had an impressive showing tonight with four goals; a new career high, one assist, and picked up one ground ball. Smith had six points tonight with two goals, four assists, and claimed five draw controls. Olmstead had three goals, one assist, forced two turnovers, picked up two ground balls, and won four draw controls.
  • 10 different Hawks scored in tonight's match-up, Ruiz nabbed her first collegiate goal and assist. Welch also claimed her first collegiate goal in this game along with an assist and one caused turnover.
  • Miller had four saves, Rivard had one save, and sophomore Emily Campbell (Plainville, Mass.) had one save tonight in net.

The Hawks will continue Conference of New England (CNE) play at home this Friday at 5:00 p.m. to take on Western New England University.
