DUDLEY, Mass - The Hawks picked up a huge Conference of New England (CNE) win on Tuesday defeating Nichols College by a 19-3 margin.
Rapid Recap:
- The Hawks took an early lead in the first inning as sophomore Alek Popovich (Rochdale, Mass.) doubled in junior Jackson Ciccone (Danbury, Conn.) who also doubled in the first. The Bison took the lead in the bottom of the first getting three runs on three hits and a defensive error.
- In the top of the third inning, Hartford exploded for 13 runs on 12 hits. It started with graduate student Jake Santiago (Bristol, Conn.) doubling home Popovich and Ciccone to even the score. Junior Patrick Joseph (Pomona, N.Y.) gave the visitors the lead with a two RBI single. After a sacrifice fly from freshman Nico DiGioia (Hamden, Conn.) produced a 6-3 advantage the Hawks kept flying high as sophomore JJ Romatzick (Stratford, Conn.) doubled home a pair of runs. Ciccone added a ribby single, before Santiago launched a three-run bomb. Joseph added a two-run blast as the lead was quickly 14-3.
- In the top of the fourth the lead grew again as Romatzick and Popovich both produced runs on a single and a fielding error. Junior Cameron Boardman (Bradford, Vt.) added a RBI single up the middle in the fifth as the lead ballooned to 17-3. The Hawks added on in the sixth as Popovich belted a homer. Finally in the seventh the Hawks added one final run on a sacrifice fly. The game was called after seven innings due to the mercy run rule.
On the Mound:

Sophomore Anthony Bubba (Jefferson, N.J.) started for Hartford going two innings allowing the three runs (zero earned) with five punch outs. Senior Luke Rier (Miami, Fla.) got the win going three innings with out allowing a run with a strikeout. Junior Sam Smith (Branford, Conn.) closed the game without allowing a baserunner in two innings while setting two down.
At the Plate:
- Santiago led the offensive explosion going 4-for-5 with a homer, double, five RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Popovich added a 4-for-5 game for himself with a homer, three runs scored, two doubles and two RBIs. Joseph tallied a 2-for-4 game with four ribbys, a homer and three runs scored.
- The Hawks had 24 hits in the seven inning game with all nine batters each getting at least a single hit.
