Hawks Advance After Dominant CNE Playoff Win Against University of New England

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Hartford men's lacrosse team defeated the University of New England 12-5 in the first round of the Conference of New England (CNE) tournament, and in the first Hartford lacrosse playoff game since 2016.

Rapid Recap:

  • The first quarter was a defensive showcase, as Hawks sophomore Ethan Hunt (Skaneateles, N.Y.) was the only player on either side to score. 15 shots were taken in this quarter, but only two saves were recorded, both by UNE.
  • The second quarter mirrored the first, as the quarter went through 10 minutes of errant shots, saves, and turnovers. Freshman Gavin Pelletier (Southington, Conn.) would finally break the stalemate inside the five-minute mark, as he extended Hartford's lead to two. UNE's Shea Fogarty closed the lead to one less than a minute later with a goal of his own. The Hawks would respond with less than 30 seconds on the clock, as Graduate Jake Ojert (Doylestown, Pa.) scored in his first game back from injury.
  • UNE's Kyle Dunn would score to open the third quarter to cut the lead to 3-2. Hartford would respond less than 10 seconds later, as Ojert netted his second. Again, wasting no time, Hunt would score, only to do it again just 10 seconds later to make the score 6-2. Keeping with the fast-paced nature of the quarter, Kyle Dunn would score just eight seconds after Hunt. However, the Hawks would then take full control of the game, thanks to four straight goals courtesy of sophomore Aiden Ezra (New Milford, Conn.), Hunt, and two from Ojert. After a few more saves by Hartford sophomore CJ Ledwick (Falmouth, Mass.), and a goal by Shea Fogarty, the quarter ended with a 10-4 advantage for the Hawks.
  • The Hawks opened up the fourth quarter with a goal for sophomore Nick Forgione (Denville, N.J.). From there, Hartford was able to drain the clock, outside of goals from Shea Fogarty and Gavin Pelletier. In their return to playoff lacrosse, the Hawks were able to take the 12-5 win.
Post Game Press:
"It's super exciting" said Graduate Jake Ojert (Doylestown, Pa.). "This is kind of what we've been working all fall and spring for so it's really exciting."

Inside the Numbers:

  • Ojert lead the Hawks on offense with five points, with four goals and one assist. Hunt matched Ojert with four goals of his own, while Pelletier and Forgione each scoring three points.
  • Defensively for the Hawks, junior Tobias Ballester (Westwood, N.J.) led the way with two caused turnovers and seven ground balls. Senior Nick DiDomizio (Cheshire, Conn.) added on with two caused and two ground balls.
