Hawks Fall in Close Loss to Williams College

WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. Hartford traveled to the Commonwealth on Wednesday afternoon to take on Williams College. Williams would come out on top in the one and only game, 7-6.

 

Rapid Recap:

  • The Hawks would get things going early as the hot bat of sophomore Alek Popovich (Rochdale, Mass.) would stay hot as he would knock in the first run of the game with 

  • an RBI single up the middle. Junior Jeremy Mangiameli (Middlefield, Conn.)  would score Popovich from third by way of a sacrifice groundout to third. 

  • In the fourth junior Ryan Knight (Peabody, Mass.) would hit a sacrifice fly into center field which would score Mangiameli, giving the Hawks an early 3-0 advantage.

  • Mangiameli would come up again in the fifth inning and score in a run, with two runners on, after a single to shortstop and an error which would advance himself to second and score sophomore J.J. Romatzick (Stratford, Conn.) 

  • Williams would mount a comeback in the middle innings as a couple of extra base knocks would give them the lead after seven innings 6-4.

  • Knight would come up and score a run again by way of a sacrifice fly to cut into the Ephs lead, bringing the score to 6-5. Later in the eighth inning, sophomore Peyton West (South Windsor, Conn.) came up and would score a run with a bases loaded RBI single to tie the game at sixes.

  • In the bottom of the ninth inning, a squeeze bunt from Williams would bring across the go ahead run, as the Ephs would take it 7-6.

 

At the Plate:

  • Mangiameli finished the day going four for five with two RBIs, two doubles, and scoring two runs. Romatzick went two for five coming across to score twice. Popovich continued to stay hot at the plate going two for five, with the aforementioned RBI as well as coming across to score himself. Graduate Student Jake Santiago (Bristol, Conn.) finished two for four with a double, as well as coming across to score.

 

On the Mound:

  • Freshman Jeffrey Blake (Hopewell, N.J.) got the start on the mound for the Hawks going four and a third inning, giving up two runs on five hits, with one strikeout and one walk in 17 at-bats. Senior Luke Rier (Miami, Fla.) came in for an inning and two thirds, giving up three runs on three hits, with a pair of strikeouts and a walk in eight at-bats. Sophomore Sean Stanley (Teaneck, N.J.) came in for an inning of relief going one inning, giving up one run on two hits, with one walk in five at-bats. Freshman Michael Greco came in to close things out for the Hawks, going one and one third inning, giving up one run on two hits, with a walk in five at-bats.

 

Up Next:

  • The Hawks head back to Massachusetts this weekend to take on Suffolk University in Boston for a crucial Conference of New England doubleheader slated for a noon start on Saturday, May 3rd.
