BOSTON, MASS. Hartford Baseball traveled to the Commonwealth for double header action on Saturday, May 3rd. Suffolk would take the game one 5-4, and Hartford would come out on top in game 2 10-6.
Game 1:
Rapid Recap:
- Scoring would start right away as Suffolk would find their way on the board early in the bottom of the first inning, giving them an early 1-0 advantage.Â
- The Hawks would come right back in the top of the second inning as sophomore Zayn Godbee (Hartford, Conn.) would drive in a run by way of an RBI single into center field to tie the ball game at one run a piece.Â
- In the third inning Suffolk would score via a sacrifice fly to give them a one run advantage.
- Suffolk would break add to the lead with a two run jack in the bottom of the fourth inning making it 4-1.
- In the top of the fifth inning sophomore J.J. Romatzick (Stratford, Conn.) would double into left field, a single from junior Jackson Ciccone (Danbury, Conn.) would put two men on for the Hawks with one out. Sophomore Alek Popovich (Rochdale, Mass.) would hit a fly ball into left field, which would get caught, however it would bring in Romatzick to bring the score to 4-2.
- In the top of the sixth inning junior Josh Kaplan (Suffern, N.Y.) would bring two across with a two-RBI single into center field, to tie the game 4-4.
- This game would see extra innings, as in the tenth inning Suffolk would bring across the game winning run via a bunt which resulted in a throwing error that would score as Suffolk would take game 1 5-4.
At the Plate:
- Ciccone finished game one three for six with no strikeouts, Romatzick went two for five in game one, with a double, as well as coming across to score once. Popovich ended two for five with an RBI. Sophomore Jeremy Mangiameli (Middlefield, Conn.) went two for five with a run. Sophomore Cameron Boardman (Bradford, Vt.) went two for three with a double and a run scored.Â
On the Mound:
- Sophomore Anthony Bubba (Jefferson, N.J.) got the start on the mound in game one, going two innings, giving up one run on three hits in 10 batters faced. Freshman Justin Gouin (North Haven, Conn.) giving up three runs on three hits in ten batters faced. Freshman Michael Greco (Berkley Hights, N.J.) threw two innings, giving up no runs on two hits, with a strike out in nine batters faced. Sophomore Tyler Blumetti (Southington, Conn.) came in for two innings of work, giving up no runs on one hit with a strike out in nine batters faced. Junior Michael Featherstone (Ramsey, N.J.) saw one inning of work, giving up one run on two hits in seven batters faced.
Game 2:
Rapid Recap:
- Suffolk again would strike first in game two, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning to give them an early 2-0 lead.
- Hartford retaliated quickly as in the second inning as Ciccone would plate three with a homer to left center field.
- The Hawks would tack on some insurance runs in the third inning as an RBI single from junior Patrick Joseph (Pomona, N.Y.) would bring in one run. Sophomore Tyler Shannon (Madison, N.J.) would hit a sacrafice fly to left field to bring the Hartford lead to 5-2.
- The Hawk's bats would stay hot as they would bring across two more runs in the fourth inning by way of an RBI double from Mangiameli that would bring across two runs.
- Hartford would bring in two more runs in the following fifth inning as Romatzick would bring in Joseph off a 6-3Â groundout. Ciccone would bring in another run coming from a sacrifice fly to center field, which would increase the Hawk lead to 9-2.
- Hartford's offense would slow down a little as they would not score again until the eight inning as graduate student Jake Santiago (Bristol, Conn.)Â would reach home from an E6. The Hawk lead would be too much to breach as they would take game two of this double header 10-6.
At the Plate:
- Ciccone would finish game two going three for five, with four RBIs and the aforementioned long ball. Santiago would have himself a three for four day, coming across to score twice. Junior Ryan Knight (Peabody, Mass.) would end game two on two for five splits, coming across to score once. Joseph went two for four in game two with one RBI and two runs. Shannon would go two for four with a double and a triple, and one RBI.
On the Mound:
- Freshman Ryan Sheehy (Shelton, Conn.) went three innings giving up two runs on three hits with four strike outs in 15 batters faced. Senior Luke Rier would come in for relief to work two innings, giving up one run on one hit with a strikeout, as well as getting the win. Freshman Evan Gentile (Berlin, Conn.) would be next on the bump going two and a third innings of shutout baseball, with one hit and three strikeouts. Sophomore Sam Smith (Branford, Conn.) would come in for two thirds innings, giving up three runs on two hits in sic batters faced. freshman Jefferey Blake would close things out for the Hawks, giving up no hits, no runs, and a strikeout, in three batters faced.
Post Game Press:
"We had a tough loss in the first game, and we knew we needed to bounce back. That was a huge win for seeding so we are happy we got a big win. Looking to carry this momentum into playoffs next week." said Ciccone.
Up Next:
The Hawks will take on Roger Williams University on Wednesday May, 7th for the first round of the Conference of New England Postseason at home, with first pitch slated for 3:00PM.
