WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hawks baseball team split on Sunday against Conference of New England (CNE) opponent Curry College winning game one by a 10-4 score, before falling 3-2 in game two.
Rapid Recap Game One (W, 10-4):
- The Colonels of Curry College struck first in the top of the third inning, coming off an RBI single, but Hartford would quickly retaliate in the bottom of the frame, as sophomore J.J. Romatzick (Stratford, Conn.) singled through the right side and junior Josh Kaplan (Suffern, N.Y,) would come around to even the score. Sophomore Alek Popovich (Rochdale, Mass.) would step in the next at bat to score Romatzick and give Hartford the lead. The Hawks would cushion the lead in the same inning as an RBI triple from junior Jeremy Mangiameli (Middlefield, Conn.) would tack on three more making the score 5-1. Junior Ryan Knight (Pebody, Mass.) would bring Mangiameli home on a two run home run, increasing the Hawk lead to six after three.
- In the bottom of the fourth inning junior Cameron Boardman (Bradford, Vt.) would knock in an RBI single that would increase the score to 8-1 plating graduate student Jake Santiago (Bristol, Conn.) and Popovich. In the top of the fifth inning Curry would put another run on the board as a throwing error scored the second run. Knight would come around to score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth to get the lead back to seven runs. The Colonels would get a run back in the top of the seventh on two hits. The Hawks would once again even the attack as Romatzick knocked a sacrifice fly to score sophomore Tyler Shannon (Madison, N.J.). Curry would get a late run in the eighth as the Hawks would hold off to win 10-4.
On the Mound:

Sophomore Anthony Bubba (Jefferson, N.J.) improved to 3-1 on the season tossing six innings allowing two runs (one earned) with eight strikeouts. Senior Luke Rier (Miami, Fla.) was next getting five outs allowing two runs with a strikeout. Sophomore Sam Smith (Branford, Conn.) closed the game getting four outs without allowing a run.
At the Plate:
- Santiago led the offense going 4-for-5 with a run scored. Shannon went 3-for-5 with a run scored. Mangiameli went 2-for-4 with a run scored a triple and three RBIs. Popovich added a 2-for-4 performance with two runs scored and a ribby.
Rapid Recap Game Two (L, 3-2):
- The bats stayed silent for the first four innings as freshman Ryan Sheehy (Shelton, Conn.) was dominant on the bump. Hartford struck first in the bottom of the fifth as Shannon singled to score Knight who doubled to kick off the inning.
- Curry answered in a big way in the top of the seventh getting three hits including a two run home run by Bobby Marshall. The Hawks tried to make a comeback again in the ninth as Shannon singled up the middle to score Mangiameli, but with the bases loaded the Hawks flied out to end the game.
