Field Hockey Falls in First CNE Matchup

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hartford Hawks held host to the Western New England Golden Bears in the team's first Conference of New England (CNE) match-up of the season. Western New England dominated every facet of this match-up, stomping out the Hawks by the score of 5-0.

Rapid Recap:
  • The Golden Bears took control early in the first period, maintaining possession deep into Hawks territory for most of the period. WNE would keep firing on the Hawks cage scoring one goal and getting one called back as it was fired just outside of the scoring circle. After picking up the penalty corner, the Golden Bears in bounded into scoring position; Midfield Analise Trani slammed home the lone goal of the first with an assist by defender Hailey Kaczka on the corner.
  • Entering into the second the score sat at 1-0 with the Golden Bears threatening to extend. The Hawks goalkeeper freshman Carolyn Somers (Worcester, Mass.) had other plans, making multiple diving saves to keep WNE at bay. Unfortunately for the Hawks, Somers could not hang on all period long, as the Golden Bears defender Paige Remington slapped in a goal to push the score to 2-0.
  • It would be more of the same coming back for second half action in this one, as the Hawks continued to play from their heels. Somers continued her fantastic day in the cage, saving 10 shots in just the first three periods. WNE would sneak another one in on Somers however, as forward Mikayla Mrzywka netted their third goal of the game with the assist from defender Jenna Nigro.
  • The Golden Bears would keep adding on, as forward Tania Evans scored on the assist from Mrzywka to make the score 4-0. Mrzywka would pick up another assist as Kayla Surprenant scored on her pass across the middle to run the score to 5-0. That is where it would stand for the rest of the match-up as the Hawks were unable to punch one in.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Somers finished with 12 saves on the 17 shots she faced. That brings her total to 26 saves on the year and moves her save percentage to .743.
  • It was all WNE, all day long, as every team stat landed in favor of the visitors, most notably shots on cage where the Golden Bears dominated 17-0.
