Hawks Men's Soccer Falls Short in CNE Opener Against Suffolk University

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hartford Men's Soccer team held host to Conference of New England (CNE) opponent Suffolk University for their home opener and first conference match up of the year. The Hawks offense came up short in this one, unable to push across a goal as they fell to the Rams by the score of 2-0.

Rapid Recap:

  • The match would get off to a slow start, as neither team was able to muster much of an offensive attack in the first half. Both teams' defense shined until the Rams were able to break the tie with a goal at the 38-minute mark as a counter attack found the boot of Mohamed Mehaya who beat the keeper.. Although the Hawks were able to draw four free kicks within the first half, they were unable to send any of them into the back of the net, getting held scoreless for the first 45 minutes of play.
Entering into the second half with the score still standing at 1-0 Suffolk, the stalemate continued as both defenses would hold strong until the waning minutes of the contest. In the 85th minute, Suffolk would notch another tally on the scoreboard as a deflected shot by Dylan Trachtenberg hit the back of the net. The Hawks would try to mount a comeback, putting two shots on net in the last few minutes of the half, but were unable to find the nylon, falling to the visiting Rams 2-0.

Inside the Numbers:

  • Senior Ryan Lunn (Southington, Conn.) picked up the loss stopping four shots while allowing the two goals.
  • Suffolk dominated the shot contest, out shooting the Hawks 15-9.
  • The Hawks split the set pieces, winning the corner kick battle, 7-3, but drew three fewer fouls than the Rams (17-14).
  • An aggressive style of defense from Suffolk tallied four yellow cards as opposed to Hartford's clean slate of cards.
