KINGS POINT, N.Y. - Hartford women's volleyball traveled to the campus of the United States Merchant Marine Academy in a tri-match between the Hawks, USMMA, and Western Connecticut State University.
Rapid Recap West Conn (L, 3-1 (25-20, 25-13, 14-25, 25-21)):
- The Hawks would jump ahead early taking a 3-1 advantage, spearheaded by a pair of blocks from junior Jenna Murphy (East Hampton, Conn.). Hartford would maintain this lead by with help from junior Kalle Legassey (Prospect, Conn.) as she would notch a kill and a service ace increasing the lead to 9-5. The Wolves of WestConnwould fight their way back in the game with a 3-0 run tying the game at 9 each. The Hawks would retaliate with a run of their own, topped off by two kills from Je. Murphy giving the Hawks a 15-10 advantage. The Hawks would maintain a cushion until their 19th point where WestConn would score the next eight points giving them a 24-19 advantage, and going on to win the first set 25-20.
- The Wolves momentum from the first set carried over into set two as they would earn the first six points of the set. Hartford would fight back in the way of a couple of service errors and a kill from junior Jordan Murphy (East Hampton, Conn.) as they cut the deficit to 7-4. WestConn would keep their foot on the gas pedal, as a 7-2 run would put them ahead 15-6 at a little over the halfway point of set two. The back and forth would continue but the deficit would be too much for the Hawks to bear as they would drop set two 25-13.
- Hartford would get off to a hot start in the third set as Legassey would secure three straight service aces to cap off a 6-2 run. The Hawks would continue this momentum with kills from Jo. Murphy and freshman Mattea Cosby (Enfield, Conn.) giving them a 10-3 lead. Hartford would continue this performance with a 6-0 run with kills from both Jenna and Jordan Murphy, as well as sophomore Emily Theobald (Verona, N.J.), bringing the score to 21-11.The Hawks would cap the set off with three points unanswered, as they would take set three 25-14.
- The fourth set would start neck and neck as neither team would allow a sizable lead, The Hawks would maintain a 7-5 advantage early on, however, a 5-1 run from WestConn would give them the lead 8-10. Freshman Lauren Johnson (Fort Collins, Colo) would tie things at 11 with a kill from Cosby. The back and forth would continue, as both teams refused to allow momentum given to the other side. Hartford would take a 21-20 advantage late in the set by way of a Jo. and Je. Murphy block, however, Westconn would score the next five points, winning them the set 25-21.
Inside the Numbers:
- Jo. Murphy continues to lead the Hawks in kills notching 12 kills in game one.
- Je. Murphy ended game one with two blocks solo and four blocks assisted.
- Theobald lead the team in attacking percentage with .364
- Senior Kylee Connally (Dallas, Texas.) finished with 22 assists.
Rapid Recap United States Merchant Marine Academy (L, 3-2 (25-16, 22-25, 25-17, 17-25, 15-12)):
- The Mariners held a 14-6 lead with a 7-1 run highlighting the early going. Senior Juliana Robinshaw (South Windsor, Conn.) tried to get the Hawks back into it with a 4-1 run started by a kill, but USMMA held strong in front winning by a 25-16 margin.
- Hartford started the second set strong with the first seven points behind two kills by Je. Murphy. The Mariners tried to make a comeback cutting the lead to within 14-13, but the visitors responded with a 5-3 spurt to stay in front. USMMA continued to inch back into it getting within 23-22 but Je. Murphy picked up a kill as the Hawks would win 25-22.
- The Mariners led 13-9 in the third set, Je. Murphy tried to start another run for the Hawks but the home team stayed in front leading the whole way to win 25-17.
- Hartford led 12-6 in the fourth set with a stellar five-point run early on. This time it was the Hawks who held the lead the whole way through winning 25-17.
- In the final set both teams traded points with the home team ahead 6-4. The teams continued to keep it close with Hartford getting it to within 10-8, but the Mariners would lead the whole way for the victory.
Inside the Numbers:
- Jo. Murphy led the attacking effort with 21 kills on a .250 percentage to go with six digs. Je. Murphy added 11 kills and 10 assisted blocks. Robinshaw added eight kills and 17 digs.
- Legassey led the defensive effort with 35 digs in the loss.
- Connally notched 33 assists and 10 digs.
