Hawks Volleyball Sweeps the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) on Thursday

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hartford volleyball team picked up a quick three-set victory on Thursday night defeating the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) by a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-21). 

Rapid Recap: 
  • The Hawks started 2-2 with the Blue Jays before Hartford rattled off the next eight points highlighted by a pair of kills by freshman Lauren Johnson (Fort Collins, Colo.). USJ tried to get back into the set cutting the Hawk lead to 16-11, but another four-point burst with kills coming for junior Jenna Murphy (East Hampton, Conn.) and senior Juliana Robinshaw (South Windsor, Conn.) helped Hartford close out the Blue Jays 25-19. 
  • The University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) led the second set by a 8-7 score and continued to lead 13-10, before the Hawks evened the score on an error, kill for Johnson and an ace by junior Emilie Hatje (Middlefield, Conn.). The teams traded points before a stellar 7-0 run for the Hawks with three-straight aces for Robinshaw helped Hartford win set two 25-20. 
  • The teams were even at 3-3 in set three, before Hartford had the first run with a 6-0 run with a kill for junior Jordan Murphy (East Hampton, Conn.), Robinshaw and Johnson. USJ would battle back cutting the Hawk lead to 12-11 but another 7-1 spurt for the visitors put Hartford on top 19-12. The Blue Jays got within 23-20 but two kills for Jo. Murphy put the game away with Hartford winning 3-0.

"It felt great to get the win tonight", said freshman Mattea Cosby (Enfield, Conn.). "We really came together as a team and got the job done."

Inside the Numbers: 
  • Cosby had a stellar game for the Hawks with 32 assists to go with seven digs and five kills from the setter position. 
  • Johnson led the Hawks in points with a career-high 14 kills to go with seven digs. Jo. Murphy tallied 10 kills to go with four digs. Robinshaw added eight kills, 11 digs and three aces.
  • Junior Kalle Legassey (Prospect, Conn.) led the defense with 23 digs in the win. 
  • The Hawks held a 42-34 kills advantage while also winning the digs battle 61-44. 
Up Next: 
The Hawks will host the United States Coast Guard Academy on Saturday with a 1:00 PM start.
