WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hartford women's soccer team fell 1-0 at home to Western New England University in a tightly contested Conference of New England (CNE) match.
Rapid Recap:Â
- The Hawks came out pressing early, taking advantage of several offensive opportunities in the opening minutes. Senior Mayson Massaro (Sarasota, Fla.) was the first Hawk to test the Golden Bears' goalkeeper with two shots on frame in the first 90 seconds of play. Western New England quickly transitioned, and gained a key corner kick at the other end of the field. In the eighth minute Meghan Hartneet lobbed a perfect cross to find the head of Liza Pinette who slotted the ball past senior Hartford goalkeeper Sejal Johnson (Weddington, N.C.) to put WNE up 1-0. Hartford tried to respond immediately with threatening shots on net from junior Kathleen Brush (Wethersfield, Conn.) and freshman Anastasia Nerney (Gloucester, R.I.) forcing WNE to make uncomfortable saves. The Hawks were unable to find their equalizer as they closed out the first.
- Hartford came out hungry for a score, senior Andrea Buzas (Wethersfield, Conn.) brought the fans to their feet as she just hit the post from a nice corner kick in the first 60 seconds. Tensions rose as we moved through this second half and the Golden Bears seemed to earn a foul every few minutes to stop the Hawks momentum. The Hawks generated several corner kicks late in the half but were unable to convert. WNE maintained their defensive composure and saw out the final minutes to preserve their 1-0 lead.
