Hawks Women's Soccer Explodes for Five Goals in Win Over Wellesley College

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hartford women's soccer team picked up another non-conference win on Wednesday night defeating Wellesley College by a 5-1 final.  

Rapid Recap:

  • The Blue had the first chance of the contest in the 13th minute as Olivia Chow-Gillette had a chance with a counter attack taking a shot from inside the box drawing a diving save from senior Sejal Johnson (Weddington, N.C.). The Hawks would counter with a goal in the 16th minute as sophomore Angela Chávez (Glastonbury, Conn.) sent a through ball to senior Rebecca Opdenbrouw (Vernon, Conn.) who found the foot of senior Cameryn Wilkinson (Wethersfield, Conn.) who placed the shot into the back of the net. Hartford now leading after the goal stayed on the attack with the next three shots but two would be saved by Riley McNair and one would go wide as the lead was 1-0 headed into the break.
  • The Blue would respond in the first 10 minutes of the second half as a corner taken by Isabella Tolosa found the foot of Quinn Shirley who bested Johnson to even the score. Seven minutes later the Hawks would jump back in front as freshman Anastasia Nerney (Glochester, R.I.) found Opdenbrouw who rocketed a shot past the diving keeper. After the goal Hartford would hold the momentum scoring a minute and a half later as freshman Claudia Skoczylas (Suffield, Conn.) found freshman Sophia Coer (Thomaston, Conn.) who connected with a beautiful strike for her first collegiate goal. The Hawks continued their onslaught in the 73rd minute as Opdenbrouw would score yet again on a pass from Nerney to get the lead to 4-1. Coer would add some insurance in the 80th minute with a header goal off a corner from Chávez as the Hawks would go on to the 5-1 win.

"Our goal today was to bounce back and even with a few players facing injuries, we wanted to put everything that we've been working on to the test against a good team", said senior Rebecca Opdenbrouw (Vernon, Conn.). "Next game is going to be very important and we are going in wanting to winand we want to play as well as we did tonight. Endicott is always fun to play against."

Inside the Numbers:
  • Opdenbrouw led the offense scoring two goals to go with an assist. Rebecca now leads the team with 10 points so far this season. Coer added a brace with career goals number one and two in the win. Wilkinson netted her fourth goal of the season in the win with the opening strike. 
  • Nerney and Chávez led the passing effort each registering two assists while Skoczylas added her first collegiate point with an assist. 
  • Johnson picked up the win making a single save in 73 minutes. Sophomore Aislyn Rivera (Morristown, N.J.) finished the game with 16:26 of action without facing a shot. 
  • The Hawks out shot the Blue 12-3 with a 10-2 on target differential. Wellesley had a 6-3 corner kick advantage.

The Hawks travel to Beverly this Saturday to take on Endicott College with a 12:00 PM start.
