SPRINGFIELD, Mass - The Hartford Women's Soccer team traveled north to take on Springfield College for a Saturday afternoon match that would result in a 4-1 victory for the Hawks.
Rapid Recap:
- Hartford got out to an ealry start on the attack, rattling off four shots in the first seven minutes trying to control the attack. The Hawks would continue to knock on the door, and it would not be long before the ball would find the back of the net, as in the 32nd minute senior Cameryn Wilkinson (Wethersfield, Conn.) would give the Hawks the first lead of the game coming off an assist from junior Kathleen Brush (Wethersfield, Conn.). The Spirit of Springfield College would try and even the score, but solid defense from Hartford would keep the score 1-0 at the end of the first half.
- The second half would kick off with immediate action, as only 40 seconds into the half Springfield College would tie the game 1-1 by way of a goal from Katie McFerran. The Hartford counter would come strong as only seven minutes later. Hartford would once again take the lead, this time coming from Brush with an assist by senior Rebecca Opdenbrouw (Vernon, Conn.). The Hawks would keep their foot on the gas pedal as about five minutes later Hartford would score again, coming from junior Morgan Egan (East Granby, Conn.) in the 57th minute. In the 81st minute Hartford would seal the deal with a final goal from freshman Anastasia Nerney (Glocester, R.I.) would put the game at it's final score of 4-1.
Inside the Numbers:
- Hartford out-shot Springfield 20-10 with nine on goal, and five for Springfield.
- Things got physical as both teams ended play with six fouls a piece
- Some stellar defense from the Hawks limited the Spirit to three shots in the second half.
- Hartford came on top in the set piece game drawing one more corner kick than Springfield College (4-3)
Post-Game Press:
"We worked hard today to move the ball and create chances collectively. We put them away and we are ready for the next one Tuesday, 6PM on the Zook!" Brush said following the game.
