AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Hartford baseball team fell in its first game in Florida on Monday, falling to William Paterson University in a game that stopped on Sunday and concluded on Monday afternoon.
Rapid Recap:
- The Pioneers jumped ahead early scoring four runs on four hits and three errors in the first inning. WPU had more success in the third getting four runs on five hits to push the lead to 8-0. The game was stopped with two outs in the top half of the third due to lightning in the area and did not start back up till 9:30 AM the next morning.
- The Hawk offense got to work in the fourth and sixth innings producing six runs over the nine outs. It started in the fourth as junior Peyton West (South Windsor, Conn.) singled home junior Joe Guglielmino (Simsbury, Conn.) and junior Jon Melarczik (Carmel, N.Y.). Junior Zaynn Godbee (Hartford, Conn.) tripled home West and sophomore Evin Curtiss (Simsbury, Conn.) hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Godbee to cut the lead to 8-4. In the 6th freshman Jayden Gaither (Meriden, Conn.) singled to score West as the lead trimmed to three. Sophomore Nico DiGioia (Hamden, Conn.) added a ribby single as the game was within two runs headed into the seventh.
- The Pioneers would explode in the seventh getting five runs on three hits and an error as the lead jumped to 13-6. In the 8th the Hawks would get three more runs on two RBIs for DiGioia and a balk, but the could not complete the comeback falling by a 13-9 margin.
On the Mound:
- Sophomore Evan Gentile (Berlin, Conn.) picked up the loss getting two outs allowing four runs (two earned). Senior Logan Huzi (Trumbull, Conn.) followed getting six outs for the Hawks allowing four runs on six hits with one punch out. Junior Sean Stanley (Teaneck, N.J.) started after the weather delay for Hartford tossing 3.1 solid innings of work allowing just one hit and one walk with two strikeouts. Junior Peter Morrissey (Airmont, N.Y.) followed giving up five runs (four earned) on three hits while getting two outs. Junior Joseph Ferrucci (Wolcott, Conn.) finished the game tossing 2.1 innings with zero runs on two hits with three punchies.
At the Plate:
- Z. Godbee led the offense going 2-for-4, with a triple, two runs scored and a RBI. DiGioia went 2-for-5 with three ribbys and a double. Sophomore Sean Newman (Morris Plains, N.J.) and Gaither both added a pair of hits in the loss.

The Hawks game against Ramapo College was cancelled and will take on Salve Regina tomorrow at 1:00 PM.
