Hawks Defeat Plattsburgh State 17-4

WEST HARTFORD, CONN. - The Hawks hosted the Plattsburgh State Cardinals in a non-conference matchup on Thursday .The Hawks would come out on top 17-4 through four quarters of action. 

Rapid Recap

  • The Cardinals of Plattsburg would start the scoring early as they would take an early 1-0 advantage in the first two minutes of action. However, the Hawks would come right back and even the game at one with a goal from junior Katie Graham (Colchester, Conn.) with an assist from sophomore Kate Zonin (North Smithfield, R.I.). Zonin would come down and find the back of the net a few plays later to give Hartford a 2-1 lead. With two minutes left in the first quarter, the Cardinals would tie the game at two a piece. However, a late in the quarter penalty would give the Hawks a man up advantage in which they would capitalize on a goal from junior Lauren Samela (Cheshire, Conn.) with the assist from junior Laurel Mcintosh (West Kingston, R.I.). AS the Hawks would enter the second quarter with a 3-2 lead. 

  • The Hawks would continue to expand their lead, as Zonin would find the back of the net yet again with a man up getting an assist from Graham. Shortly after Zonin would score again, completing the hat trick on the day, and giving the Hawks a 5-2 lead. Hartford would notch another goal, as senior Sarah Costa (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) would score her 15th goal of the year. McIntosh would earn a free position and find the back of the net to give Hartford a 7-2 lead. Plattsburgh would come down and find the back of the net in a free position to give them their third goal of the day. Zonin would score again to give the Hawks an 8-3 lead going into halftime. 

  • It would take a little longer than the first two periods before a goal would be scored, however at around the 12 minute mark, Samela would score and give the Hawks a 9-3 lead. Costa would extend the Hawks lead once again as she would score in the seven and a half minute mark, as the Hawks lead would expand 10-3. A free position look would give Costa the hat trick, and extend Hartford's lead to eight. Only a few possessions later, Samela would find the back of the net with an unassisted goal, which would give the Hawks a 12-3 lead. Graham would extend on the lead with another goal, coming off an assist from Costa giving the Hawks a 13-3 advantage at the three and a half minute mark. Plattsburgh would bring the game within single digits on a free position goal, which would end the third quarter with the Hawks leading 13-4.

  • The Hawks wouldn't be able to find the back of the net but when they did it opened the flood gates as Zonin would make a great move in the crease and find the back of the net for her fifth goal of the day to give the Hawks a 15-4 lead. McIntosh would come down in the next possession and extend the Hartford lead 15-4. In the next couple of minutes, Graham would come down, dodge a couple defenders and score another goal for Hartford's 16th goal of the afternoon. Shortly after sophomore Jayleen Ruiz (Goshen, N.Y.) would find the back of the net for her first goal of the day, the Hawk's 17th. Plattsburgh would earn a free position look and capitalize with one minute left as the final score would be 17-5. 

 

Inside the Numbers

  • Zonin led all scorers with five goals, with seven shots (seven on goal), an assist and a ground ball. Costa finished with three goals on eight shots, (six on goal) with two assists and seven draw controls. Samela finished with three goals, five shots (four on goal), with six draw controls. Graham would finish with three goals with all three shots on goal, with an assist. 

  • Sophomore Allison O'Donnell (Goshen, N.Y.) led the game in caused turnovers with two. Senior Samantha Ciaglo (Colchester, Conn.) McIntosh, sophomore Abby Scher (Wayne, N.J.), and senior Adriana Oddo (Southington, Conn.) would end with one each. 

  • The Hawks ended with 33 shots, and four saves. 

  • Samela would control the draw, earning 16 draw wins. 

 

Post Game Press:
"It felt really good, I think we played really well as a team today, defense was working, offense was working, and the draw was working. Coming off the first few losses we're really fired up. "
