DANBURY, Conn. - The Hawks women's lacrosse team fell to 0-3 on the young season on Saturday falling to Western Connecticut State University by a 13-9 final.
Rapid Recap:
- Junior Mandi Rivard (Vernon, Conn.) made two saves early on, but the Wolves kept all the momentum scoring two goals in the opening five minutes. West Conn continued to stay in control tallying the first seven goals in the contest and cruising to a 7-0 lead after the first quarter. The Hawks would only manage three shots which didn't find the cage.
- Hartford would finally get on the board as junior Lauren Samela (Cheshire, Conn.) scored her ninth goal of the season just 29 seconds into the second. Rivard would keep the Hawks into the contest making four more saves in the next 11 minutes of game action. Samela continued her offensive push finding senior Courtney Ingham (Bedford, N.H.) who picked up her first goal of the season. Ingham would follow it up with a free position strike as Hartford trailed 7-3 at halftime.
- West Conn would open up the third quarter with three-straight goals to take a 10-3 advantage. Junior Katie Graham (Colchester, Conn.) stopped the run with a goal for Hartford assisted by sophomore Brenna Slattery (Wilbraham, Mass.). The Wolves would tally one more strike, but sophomore Kate Zonin (North Smithfield, R.I.) would get a goal of her own as the Hawks trailed 11-5 with 15 minutes to play.
- The lead went up to 12-5 after the first minute of the fourth as Gina Giambald scored her fourth of the game. Hartford would respond with two goals in a row, first from senior Sara Costa (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) with Graham following with her second. West Conn would score their final goal, but the Hawks would get two more to cut the lead to four with three minutes to play. The Wolves would run out the clock to win by the 13-9 margin.
Inside The Numbers:
- Zonin played really well for the Hawks scoring a goal to go with an assist and 11 draw controls. Graham, Ingham and Costa all scored a pair of goals in the loss. Samela added a goal, an assist and three draws.
- Senior Samantha Ciaglo (Colchester, Conn.) led the defense with a caused turnover to go with five grounders.
- Rivard stopped 11 shots in the loss.
- Madison Ratchford led the Wolves with five points on three goals and two assist to lead the home team to victory.
- West Conn held a 23-11 shots on goal advantage in the game while causing six turnovers to Hartford's three.
