Hartford Baseball's Win Streak Hits 7 in 15-10 Win Over Johnson & Wales

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Hartford baseball team pushed their winning streak to seven games on Tuesday defeating Conference of New England (CNE) opponent Johnson & Wales University by a 15-10 final. 

Rapid Recap:

  • The Wildcats jumped ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first on a solo homer. Hartford would respond in the bottom of the first as senior Jackson Ciccone (Danbury, Conn.) launched a solo shot of his own. JWU would keep the momentum getting four runs in the bottom of the second on three hits to take a 5-1 advantage. 
  • Hartford tried to spark the early comeback getting two back in the top of the third. It started with a junior Alek Popovich (Dudley, Mass.) triple to score one followed by a Ciccone RBI single. In the top of the fourth the offense finally exploded going for five runs on five hits and two defensive errors as Hartford snuck in front 8-5. Senior Jeremy Mangiameli (Middlefield, Conn.) had the big hit in the inning with a two RBI double. The Hawks would add once again getting seven runs on four hits and two more errors in the top of the fifth as the lead ballooned to 15-5. Ciccone would bring home two more on a RBI double to highlight the outburst. 
  • Johnson & Wales would try to mount a comeback of their own but they would only get four runs across the remaining four innings falling by the 15-10 margin. 

On the Mound:

  • Sophomore Justin Gouin (North Haven, Conn.) would get the start going two innings allowing five runs. Freshman Logan Smalley (Chatham, N.Y.) improved to 2-0 on the year going three innings allowing one run with three punch outs. Sophomore Michael Greco (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) would go a lone inning allowing three runs. Junior Sam Smith (Branford, Conn.) would follow going a single inning with a run earned. Senior Michael Featherstone (Ramsey, N.J.) closed the door throwing two innings with out allowing a run with four strikeouts. 

At the Plate:

  • Ciccone led the offense going 4-for-6 with a homer, double, five ribbys and three runs scored. Overall four Hawks joined Ciccone with two or more hits. Sophomore Nico DiGioia (Hamden, Conn.), Popovich and Mangiameli all had three hits, while senior Cameron Boardman (Daegu, South Korea) had a pair in the win. 
Up Next:
The Hawks will travel to Keene tomorrow to take on Keene State at 3:00 PM.
