WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hartford women's lacrosse team improved to 9-5 on the year and 6-2 in Conference of New England (CNE) play on Tuesday defeating Roger Williams University by a 8-6 final.
Rapid Recap:
- Hartford and Roger Williams both started slow with neither team getting a goal until the 8:33 mark of the first quarter. Sophomore Kate Zonin (North Smithfield, R.I.) would get the scoring going on a free position strike. The home team would jump ahead 4-0 overall as junior Lauren Samela (Cheshire, Conn.), Zonin and junior Talei Ricketson (Centennial, Colo.) all scored for Hartford. RWU would get on the board late as Allie Shamberger scored via a free position as the visitors trailed 4-1 after 15 minutes.
- Zonin continued to dominate play scoring two of the first three goals in the second quarter as Hartford saw the lead hit 6-2. Senior Sara Costa (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) added a free position goal, but Mollee Merritt scored another late goal for Roger Williams as the Hawks held a 7-3 lead into half.
- RWU would dominate the third quarter scoring the lone two goals of the period to cut the deficit to 7-5 with 15 minutes to play. Junior Mandi Rivard (Vernon, Conn.) would make two huge saves and cause a turnover as Hartford held on to the lead.
- Costa would kick off the fourth with a massive goal from junior Laurel McIntosh (West Kingston, R.I.) to push the lead back to 8-5. Rivard continued the stellar play making three saves before allowing a sixth goal with 4:09 left in the game. Hartford would keep possession for most of the remaining time en route to holding on for the 8-6 win.
Inside the Numbers:
- Zonin led the offense with four goals. Costa played huge going for a pair of goals and an assist. McIntosh, Samela and Ricketson would each contribute the other points.
- Rivard made 10 saves while causing three turnovers in the win.
- Sophomore Emiley Bussiere (Agawam, Mass.) played a huge role in the win causing two turnovers. Seniors Samatha Ciaglo (Colchester, Conn.), Shelby Frashure (Pasadena, Md.) and Adriana Oddo (Southington, Conn.) would each cause a turnover each in the win.
- Hartford now sits in the second seed in the CNE Playoff Picture with two regular season games left.
