Hartford Men's Lacrosse Comes Up Short Against Western New England in CNE Semifinals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Hartford men's lacrosse team fell just short on Wednesday night falling to Western New England University by a 15-12 final. 

Rapid Recap:

  • The Golden Bears snatched the momentum from the jump scoring the first four goals in the first four minutes. Junior Colin Reilly (Southington, Conn.) scored the first Hawk goal from junior Michael Novotny (Cornwall, N.Y.) to end the run. Western New England would get one back a minute later to lead by a 5-1 score. Sophomore Nick Ugolini (Agawam, Mass.) would bury a goal for the Hawks to kick start a 3-0 closing run for the visitors. Novotny and junior Trent Beggs (Somers, Conn.) would get the other goals as the first quarter closed with a 5-4 lead for the Golden Bears. 
  • Western New England would open the scoring in the second to take a 6-4 lead. Reilly would spark the comeback scoring back-to-back goals followed by a pair of strikes from Hartford as the visitors jumped in front 8-6. Sophomore Gavin Pelletier (Southington, Conn.) and junior Aidan Ezra (New Milford, Conn.) got the two goals for the Hawks as they held the lead into the break. 
  • Just like the start of the first half the Golden Bears would get four-straight to start the third quarter as the jumped in front 10-8. Ugolini and Novotny would get goals of their own including a final second score to even the score at 10-10 headed into the final quarter. 
  • Western New England would take a two goal lead in the first three minutes after a pair of strikes. Ugolini would answer with a goal, but The Golden Bears scored back-to-back to take the 14-11 lead. Ugolini scored once more with six minutes to play, but Western New England would score a final time and hold the lead for the win. 
Inside The Numbers:
  • Ugolini scored four goals in the loss to lead the scoring. Novotny and Reilly contributed three points each. Sophomore Shaun Wright (Frederick, Md.) added two assists. 
  • Junior Trent Beggs (Somers, Conn.) led the defense with a goal and two caused turnovers. 
  • Sophomore CJ Ledwick (Falmouth, Mass.) picked up the loss with 12 saves. 
  • Jacob Roy led the Golden Bears with two goals and four assists. Thomas Labbe added five goals.

This concludes the Hawks season with a record of 11-6 with a 7-2 CNE record.
