BEVERLY. Mass. - Hartford Women's Lacrosse hit the road to face #1 Endicott in the Conference of New England (CNE) Playoffs and fell by the score of 22-8.
Rapid Recap:
- The Gulls started the scoring just over a minute into the first quarter with a goal from Mia Smith, one of the two offensive leaders on Endicott's squad. The Hawks responded right away with a goal of their own by junior Lauren Samela (Cheshire, Conn.) with a man up. The Endicott offense was back on the attack, picking up a goal in the fifth and sixth minutes to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Gulls. Hartford would answer with a goal of their own from the leader of their offense, sophomore Kate Zonin (North Smithfield, R.I.). From that point on in the first quarter, Endicott would take control, scoring five unanswered goals to make the score 8-2 after 15 minutes of play.
- This dominance continued for Endicott into the second as the Gulls would score three more unanswered to make the streak eight, running the score up to 11-2. Junior Talei Ricketson (Centennial, Colo.) got the Hawks back on the board with her goal in the ninth minute of the second quarter. Alongside Ricketson's goal, Zonin was able to net her second of the day before halftime to try to keep the Hawks alive. Despite the effort, Endicott would net two more scores in the final 38 seconds of game clock to finish the first half at the score of 14-4.
- Coming out of halftime, the Hawks were able to regain control in the contest, slowing down the Endicott offense and turning the momentum back on their side. Senior Courtney Ingham (Bedford, N.H.) was able to make a difference on both ends, picking up multiple ground balls and bringing the Hawks back into scoring position. Zonin continued her great game, sending home three goals in the period with Samela picking up her second as well. Endicott was able to find a crack in the Hawks' defense before the end of the quarter; however, as the Gulls found the back of the net twice to end the third with the score at 16-8.
- Entering the fourth, it seemed as though the Hawks ran out of steam, as Endicott was able to rattle off a string of six straight goals to make the run eight straight before the final horn. Despite four shots by Hartford in the final quarter, the Hawks were shut out in the period, dropping the contest by the final score of 22-8.
Inside the Numbers:
- Hartford's offense was led by Zonin and Samela, who scored seven out of the eight goals for the Hawks in the contest. Endicotts two headed monster in Smith and Emerson Clark led the way for the Gulls, scoring four and five goals respectively.
- Junior Laurel McIntosh (West Kingston, R.I.) and senior Samantha Ciaglo (Colchester, Conn.) held it down on defense for the Hawks, causing two turnovers each and picking up a combined six ground balls with two for Ciaglo and four for McIntosh. Grace McAfee was the anchor for the Gulls, picking up four ground balls and causing three turnovers.
- In net, both junior Emily Campbell (Plainville, Mass.) and junior Mandi Rivard (Vernon, Conn.) saw time, with Campbell making seven saves and Rivard making three. Severine Michel and Emma Budke were in net for Endicott, with both keepers tallying four saves.
