SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Hartford women's lacrosse team dropped to 3-2 in Conference of New England (CNE) play falling to Western New England University by a 11-8 final.
Rapid Recap:
- The game was scoreless for the first five minutes with two saves coming for Emily Picolla from WNE. The Golden Bears took the lead scoring the lone two goals in the period as the Hawks trailed early. Both teams would only generate three shots on target with junior Mandi Rivard (Vernon, Conn.) making one save while Picolla made all three.
- The Golden Bears continued to improve the lead scoring the next two scores over three minutes in the second quarter. Sophomore Kate Zonin (North Smithfield, R.I.) would stop the run scoring midway through the second getting the Hawks first goal of the game. Western New England scored the next three to take a 7-1 commanding lead. Zonin would score again but the home team held a 8-2 lead headed into the break.
- The third quarter started slow once again with the Golden Bears scoring two the first two goals of the second half over the first nine minutes. Senior Sara Costa (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) would start a Hartford comeback as the Hawks would rattle the last three goals of the quarter as the lead was 10-5 for WNE with 15 minutes to play. Junior Laurel McIntosh (West Kingston, R.I.) and Zonin added the other goals on the run.
- Costa would kick off the fourth quarter scoring her second goal as the lead was trimmed to four. The teams would trade strikes over the next couple of minutes and after junior Katie Graham (Colchester, Conn.) scored the Hawks were within three goals. The Golden Bears would lock down defensively to close the game and win by the 11-8 final.
Inside The Numbers:
- Zonin led the Hawks with four goals to go with two draw controls. Costa added two goals. Graham added a goal and an assist.
- Junior Lauren Samela (Cheshire, Conn.) and McIntosh led the defense with two caused turnovers.
- Rivard stopped five shots in the loss as her record stands at 5-5.
- The Hawks out shot the Golden Bears 32-27 in the loss, but WNE held a 15-14 on target differential.
