#2 Hartford Baseball Defeats #4 Nichols College 6-2 to Advance to CNE Championship Semifinal

BEVERLY, Mass. - #2 Hartford Baseball took on #4 Nichols College in the Loser's Bracket of the Conference of New England (CNE) playoff tournament. The Hawks were able to come out on top with a 6-2 final. 

Rapid Recap: 
  • Hartford would open the scoring in the second inning, when sophomore Nico Digioa (Hamden, Conn.) would drive in a run off a RBI single into center field. Later in the inning senior Patrick Joseph (Ponoma, N.Y.) would bring in a run on a RBI single into right field, bringing in Digioa and extending the Hawk lead to 2-0.
  • The Hawks would continue to add to their lead around the halfway point as in the fifth inning senior Alek Popovich (Dudley, Mass.) would hit an RBI double into left field and bring in one more run making it a 3-0 score through five. In the sixth inning, DIgioa would notch another RBI by way of a sacrifice fly, and Joseph would bring in a run from yet another RBI single, as the Hawks would lead 5-0 through six innings. 
  • Nichols would find some life in the seventh and eighth inning tallying two runs from an RBI single and a home run to make the score 5-2 through eight.
  • In the bottom frame of the eighth inning the Hawks would add some insurance from junior J.J. Romatzick (Stratford, Conn.) who would work a walk to bring in the final run of the ballgame as Hartford would win and advance to the semifinal 6-2.
On the Mound:
  • Junior Anthony Bubba (Jefferson, N.J.) would go all nine innings, giving up two runs on five hits, with five strikeouts in 38 batters faced. 
At the Plate:
  • Popovich would go 2-5 with one RBI, with a pair of doubles, senior John Russell (Eastchester, N.Y.) would go 2-4 with a double, and coming around to score twice for Hartford. Joseph would go 2-3 with two RBIs. 
Up Next:
The Hawks advance to the CNE Championship Semifinal where they will play the loser of #1 Endicott College and #3 Western New England University 45 minutes after the finish of that game on Friday May 8th.
