#2 Hartford Baseball Suffers Extra Inning Loss to #3 Western New England

BEVERLY, Mass. - On Thursday, the Hawks baseball team kicked off the Conference of New England (CNE) Championship Pod on Thursday falling to Western New England University by a 8-4 final. 

Rapid Recap:

  • The Golden Bears got a pair of runs in the top of the first on a pair of defensive errors to jump ahead 2-0. The Hawk bats were rolling early, but Hartford would hit into three double plays and a triple play in the first four innings. Senior Jackson Ciccone (Danbury, Conn.) pickled up a RBI single in the fourth to cut the lead in half. 
  • WNE would add an insurance run in the top of the fifth to lead 3-1. Hartford would get the run right back as senior John Russell (Eastchester, N.Y.) singled and stole second, junior Zaynn Godbee (Hartford, Conn.) got the RBI on a fielder's choice. Ryan Montini would get the run back for the visitors with a solo shot in the seventh.
  • Hartford would get two runs in the bottom of the seventh as Rusell brought in a run via a RBI single. The other run would come by way of senior Patrick Joseph (Pomona, N.Y.) with an RBI single into center field. to tie the game at four a piece. 
  • In the top of the tenth inning, WNE would tally on four runs, and the Hawks would not be able to reciprocate, ending in a 8-4 final.

On the Mound:

  • Senior Jeff Dooley (West Hartford, Conn.) would get the start for Hartford going 6.2 innings, giving up four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and one walk in 31 batters faced. Freshman Logan Smalley (Chatham, N.Y.) going 0.1 inning and giving up one hit on no runs with a strikeout. Senior Michael Featherstone (Ramsey, N.J.) would come in for 2.1 innings, giving up four runs on five hits with a strikeout and a walk. in 14 batters faced. Junior Sam Smith (Branford, Conn.) would come in for 0.2 innings, giving up no runs on no hits with a strikeout.

At the Plate

  • Russell would go 3-4 at the plate with one RBI and a stolen base, Senior Alek Popovich (Dudley, Mass.) would go 2-5 with a run, Ciccone would finish 2-5 with an RBI, senior Jeremy Mangiamelli (Middlefield, Conn.) would finish go 2-5 with a double.
  • The Hawks would only knock in one extra base hit with a double from Mangiamelli.
  • Hartford would end with 14 hits, and leave seven men stranded.

Up Next:
The Hawks will play Nichols College in the loser's bracket of the CNE Playoff tournament at 6:55PM on Thursday April 7th.
