WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - On Tuesday, the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District At-Large teams were announced with two members of the Hartford field hockey team featured.
The College Sports Communicators Academic All-America® and Academic All-District® Teams program recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in athletic competition and in the classroom. To be considered for inclusion on the Academic All-District® and Academic All-America® At-Large Team, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically, must have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average, and must have competed in 90 percent of the institution's games played or
must start in at least 66 percent of the institution's games.
The two Hawks being named to the team were senior
Mikayla Mathews (Pittsgrove, N.J.) and senior
Sara Costa (Shrub Oak, N.Y.).
Mathews appeared and started in all 15 of Hartford's games during her senior season. Accumulating the third-most minutes on the team with 905, Mathews was a key performer throughout the year for the Hawks. She registered the first assist of her collegiate career on October 7th against Manhattanville in a close 2-1 win in double-overtime. At the end of the season, Mathews was recognized by being selected to the Conference of New England (CNE) Community Service Team. Mikayla was also named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Squad and CNE Academic All-Conference. She also became the first Hawk in program history to be a NFHCA Scholar of Distinction.
Costa appeared and started in all 15 of Hartford's games during her senior season, accumulating 883 total minutes. Costa would end the year with 12 shots on goal, the second most on the team, showing her propensity to be in dangerous attacking positions. She would pick up her first collegiate assist for the Hawks on September 9th against Albertus Magnus in a 5-1 victory. Sara was later named to National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Academic Squad and CNE Academic All-Conference.
