Hartford Field Hockey Drops 4-2 Decision to Nichols

DUDLEY, MASS. - The Hartford field hockey team opened conference play on Friday afternoon as the Hawks fell to Nichols by a 4-2 final. Hartford would battle throughout the 60 minutes, but the Bison would use a three-goal second half to secure the victory.
 

Rapid Recap:

  • The Bison would be on the attack early as they controlled possession for the majority of the first quarter. Freshman Leah Miller (Guilderland, N.Y.) would work hard in net as she tallied two saves to keep the Hawks within striking distance. Nichols would get on the board first at the 10:40 mark as Evelyn Linehan would find the back of the cage off a pass from Sofia Calabro to give the Bison a 1-0 lead after 15 minutes.
  • The Hawks' offense would turn on in the second quarter as they would battle for possession and create several opportunities. Hartford would earn three penalty corners before Ashley Taylor (South Deerfield, Mass.) would tie the game at 19:09 off a pass from Alexina Lentes (Londonderry, N.H.). The Bison would soon answer as Emma Bianculli would score at the 22:02 mark off a pass from Lily Gibson to put Nichols back ahead 2-1. The Bison would hold the lead going into halftime.
  • Nichols would continue to apply pressure in the third quarter as the Bison would earn two penalty corners and create several opportunities on goal. Miller would make three saves in the quarter, but Nichols would extend its lead with just under a minute remaining. Lily Gibson would score at the 44:01 mark to put the Bison ahead 3-1 heading into the final quarter.
  • The Hawks would immediately come out strong in the fourth quarter as they would earn two penalty corners in the opening minutes. Freshman Olive Thatcher (Keene, N.H.) and Sophomore Ava Lipson (Colchester, Vt.) would both seek opportunities on goal, but their shots would be blocked. The Bison would earn multiple penalty corners of their own, but Miller would continue to keep Hartford within striking distance. Taylor would score her second goal of the game at the 57:30 mark to tighten the game to 3-2. Nichols would answer just 39 seconds later as Sofia Calabro would find the back of the cage to make it 4-2. Hartford would continue to fight until the final whistle, but Nichols would hold on for the 4-2 victory.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Taylor would lead the Hawks with two goals in the loss, scoring both of Hartford's goals.
  • Miller would make six saves over the 60 minutes, including four saves in the second quarter as Hartford battled to stay in the game.
  • The Hawks would earn six penalty corners in the game while Nichols would have eight.
  • Nichols would hold a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal while outshooting the Hawks 18-11 overall.
