Hartford Men's Soccer Erases Deficit to Earn Draw Against University of New England

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hartford men's soccer team used late heroics to escape with a point on Saturday night drawing the University of New England by a 3-3 final. 

Rapid Recap:

  • The Hawks would get the first chance in the 19th minute as sophomore Eddie Hageman (Colchester, Conn.) got a shot off saved by Landon Dominski. Hartford would dominate the early going but a miscommunication on the back line resulted in a goal for the Nor'easters as Reaves Debin jumped a pass before earning the goal. The Hawks would equalize in the 31st minute as freshman Justin Dooley (Andover, Conn.) found the foot of freshman Cole Jones (Plainville, Conn.) who fired a rocket from 20 feet out for the score. The teams would trade possession in the next bit with a poor clearance for Hartford finding the foot of Brady Colgan in the 40th minute who launched a goal from 20 yards out to give the visitors the lead again. The Hawks continued to try to find another equalizer but could not as the teams ended the first with UNE holding a 2-1 lead. 
  • The Hawks would get two off target shots in the first 10 minutes of the second half which really saw nothing of note. The Nor'easters would be given a gift in the 62nd minute as a handball in the box awarded them a penalty. Cole Osburn fired it past a diving junior Crisitan Vitti (Stamford, Conn.) to give UNE a 3-1 lead with 29 minutes to play. The Hawks continued to try and find a spark offensively getting four shots on target all saved by Dominski. In the 74th minute Hartford would get one back as freshman Giancarlo Bacabac (Somers, Conn.) lofted a through ball to Hageman who chipped it over the keeper for the goal. The Hawks continued to fly as just two minutes later freshman Jovan Lopez-Gutierrez (Meriden, Conn.) would equalize as the game was 3-3. The Hawks would get a couple more chances, but none came to fruition as the game ended as a draw. 

Inside the Numbers:

  • Jones and Hageman would tally their first collegiate goals in the tie, while Lopez-Gutierrez takes the team lead on the season with his second of the year. 
  • Dooley, Bacabac and junior Adam Eley (Newington, Conn.) all registered their first assists of the year. 
  • Vitti played all 90 minutes with his record moving to 2-1-2. 
  • Debin, Colgan and Osburn all got their second goals of the season in the draw. 
  • Dominski made six saves to earn the point. 
  • The Hawks out shot the Nor'easters 17-5, with a 10-3 on target differential.
