Hartford Field Hockey Falls to Springfield College in Opening Match

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Hartford Field Hockey team opened their season on Wednesday Evening, in a match up against Springfield College. Springfield would come out on top in this contest with a 6-0 victory. 

Rapid Recap:
  • Springfield would get to an early start as their first goal would come right before the two minute mark. After a few buildups on the Hawks end, Springfield would earn a penalty corner. Junior Nicole Ciampa (Jefferson, N.J.) would save the first attempt, however not without Springfield earning another penalty corner that would find the back of the goal. Ciampa would go on to make a couple more saves, but with seconds to spare in the first quarter Springfield would score another goal, putting them ahead 3-0. 
  • Ciampa would continue to make, back to back saves to open up the second period, but Springfield would score, yet again increasing their lead to 4-0. Hartford would also earn their first shot of the game in this period, as freshman Olive Thatcher (Keene, N.H.) would notch a shot for the Hawks.
  • Sophomore Carolyn Somers (Worcester, Mass.) would come in to replace Ciampa in the second half. Sophomore Eva Nasse (Wethersfield, Conn.) would register a shot for the Hawks six minutes into the period. The third period would end in a stalemate, as Springfield would maintain their 4-0 lead.
  • The Hawks would open the fourth period with a penalty corner awarded to sophomore Ashley Taylor (South Deerfield, Mass.) which would not result in a goal. Springfield would score two more goals in the final period, but not before Somers would earn her 100th career save as a Hawk. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Hartford would be outshot 22-3 through four periods, with 18 Springfield shots coming on target and only one for the Hawks.
  • Somers and Ciampa would combine for 12 saves, with Ciampa securing nine, and Somers with three. Somers would pick up her 100th collegiate save in the loss. Nicole is the first in program history to 100 saves. 
  • Springfield would win the penalty corner as well by securing five to Hartford's three.
