WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hartford field hockey team fell to 1-6 on the young season Tuesday night falling to Clark University by a 3-0 final.
Rapid Recap:
- The teams would trade possession in the early going with the first shot coming in the 7th minute by sophomore Kyra Benard (Agawam, Mass.) but the shot was saved by Rachel Reiter. The Cougars would get the first goal at the 14:32 mark of the first as Mackenzie Kleefisch took a shot that trickled through the defense and found the stick of Katelyn Towne who tapped in the score. Clark led 1-0 after the first.
- Sophomore Carolyn Somers (Worcester, Mass.) would make three key saves in the second quarter as the Cougars was more in control in the second. Hartford would generate a penalty corner in the 26th minute, but freshman Olive Thatcher's (Keene, N.H.) shot would be blocked as the teams went into halftime with the score still at 1-0.
- Somers would make another save in the 37th minute, but the Cougars would tally their second goal in the 42nd minute. Nina Pierson would get the goal on an assist by Sedona Lee. Clark would get the third goal in the final minute of the quarter as Kleefisch scored with an assist to Olivia Bass.
- Somers continued to keep the Hawks in the game in the fourth quarter making a pair of huge saves. Benard and sophomore Ava Lipson (Colchester, Vt.) each had chances for Hartford but Reiter made two saves. Hartford would hit the post once again late, but Clark would pick up the win.
Inside the Numbers:
- Somers played the full 60 minutes stopping seven shots in the loss.
- Towne, Kleefisch and Pierson all scored goals in the win for the Cougars.
- Reiter had the shutout with four saves in the win.
- The Cougars outshot the Hawks 13-12, but had a 10-4 on target differential.
