Albany, NY – The University of Hartford men's soccer team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory over the Albany Great Danes in the Hawks' America East conference opener on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore forward Patrick Boucher's first half goal – his first of the 2009 season – proved to be all the Hawks needed to earn their first win in five games.
With the win, Hartford improves its overall record to 4-5-1. Albany, who is still in search of its first mark in the win column, drops to 0-8-2 overall while holding a 0-1-0 mark in the America East.
“Winning away from home in our first game in the challenging America East conference is a great way to start,” commented Head Coach Dan Gaspar. “Today's win was a very important victory. We will enjoy the ride back home.”
Hartford notched the lone goal of the match mid-way through the first half. Senior Ivan Guarin ignited the Hawks' offense as he fired a shot at Albany keeper Adrian Foncette. The Great Danes' keeper stopped the ball from reaching the back of the net, deflecting it towards Boucher who snuck the rebound past Foncette at 23:23 to put the visitors at an early 1-0 advantage. The goal was Boucher's first of the 2009 season.
The Hawks continued to dominate the offensive stats as they outshot the Great Danes by a 23-11 margin while holding a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Through 10 games, Hartford has outshot its opponents 169-113 this season.
Hartford keeper Nenad Cudic stopped the only two shots he faced to earn his third clean slate of the season. For the Great Danes, Foncette played the entire 90 minutes, stopping 10 shots while allowing one.
Boucher was deemed the player of the game for Hartford, while Foncette earned the honors for the Great Danes.
After three-straight games on the road, the Hawks return to the friendly confines of Al-Marzook Field to face America East conference-foe Vermont on Wednesday, October 7. The Hawks and Catamounts are scheduled to kick-off at 7:00 p.m.
