DURHAM, N.H. – The University of Hartford volleyball team opened up its America East Conference season with a road loss to the New Hampshire Wildcats in four sets (14-15, 25-20, 12-25, 23-25) on Friday night. Leading the Hawks was junior Michelle Cordell who finished with nine kills and 11 digs, tops in each category.
Cordell finished the match with a .115 hitting percentage with six errors in 26 total attacks. Just behind Cordell was sophomore outside hitter Kami Nethersole who finished with seven kills and a .103 hitting percentage. Nethersole finished with four errors in 29 total attacks.
Leading the Hawks in hitting percentage was senior setter Lindsay Ford and red shirt sophomore Ashlee Herbst who each finished with four kills and no errors. Ford finished with a total of seven attacks for a .571 hitting percentage, while Herbst took 11 swings to finish with a .364 attack percentage. Ford captained the Hawks offense throughout the match, finishing with 26 assists.
Defensively, the Hawks were balanced across the board with Cordell's 11 digs leading the team. Joining her with double figure digs was Lindsay Makowicki who finished with 10 digs. Following Cordell and Makowicki was Nethersole with nine digs, Ford with eight digs and Sydney Scott and Danielle Etta who each finished with seven digs.
As a team, the Hawks finished with a .103 hitting percentage. The team compiled 35 total kills and suffered 22 errors in 126 total attacks. The Wildcats led both teams in hitting with 55 total kills and 26 errors in 140 attacks for a .207 hitting percentage.
Hartford will return to conference play on Sunday when they travel to the newest member of the America East, Providence for a 1:00 p.m. start.
