PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Hartford women's tennis team was knocking on the door in Wednesday afternoon's match at Providence College out of the Big East, but they came up just short as they fell to the Friars, 5-2.
Lauren Coggins and
Kaitlin Lennon earned the points for Hartford, while
Nicole Haynal and
Haley Gileau grabbed their doubles match.
"We were within a few points here and there of upsetting a quality team today," head coach Michael Raymond remarked. "The doubles point was very close and a couple more singles matches could have gone our way as well. The women showed great heart and fight, and we have a lot to look forward to this weekend if we continue to play like this."
With Haynal and Gileau earning an 8-5 victory at Number Three doubles, the Hawks very nearly grabbed the doubles point to open play when Coggins and
Katina Zampas battled but fell at Number Two doubles, 8-6.
Zampas had another strong showing at Number Two singles, where she stretched her match with Providence's Maria Clara Bernandez before falling, 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 10-5.
Hartford got solid production from the back end of its lineup, with Coggins winning at Number Five singles and Lennon claiming victory at Number Six. Coggins, like Zampas, stayed strong through three sets before emerging with a 2-6, 6-3, 10-6 triumph over Providence's Courtney Fuller.
Lennon bounced back after dropping her first set, 6-1, to win the next two sets by convincing 6-3 decisions over Alex Gerry.
