WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – A late first half goal off the foot of sophomore James Stamopoulos proved to be enough for the University of Hartford men's soccer team to earn the victory over conference-foe University of New Hampshire on Saturday night at Al-Marzook Field. The Hawks defeated the Wildcats by a 1-0 final, improving to 4-7-0 overall with an even mark of 2-2 in America East play.
New Hampshire drops to 5-3-4 and 0-2-2 in America East play. Hartford has marked wins in three of its four home games this season, posting shutouts in each of its wins.
With just 45 seconds remaining on the scoreboard before the halftime intermission, Stamopoulos broke up 44 minutes of scoreless soccer and delivered the game-winning tally. Sam Groves got the play started when he pulled the trigger from 18 yards out on the right side. His attempt bounced off the right post landing in front of Stamopoulos who shoved in his second goal of the season front point-blank.
Hartford outshot New Hampshire 12-5, including an 8-3 advantage in the final stanza. The Hawks and Wildcats finished even with three corner kicks a piece.
In net, Luke Citriniti was tested just once in the contest while Colin O'Donnell rejected a game-best three shots. Stamopoulos was deemed the Hawks' "Man of the Match" while Jordan Thomas garnered the honors for New Hampshire.
The Hawks take a break from league play when they welcome the Army Black Knights to West Hartford on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 7:00 p.m. for their final regular season, non-conference match of the season.
