STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The University of Hartford volleyball team dropped a four-set (25-23, 15-25, 12-25, 17-25) conference match to the Stony Brook Seawolves on Friday in Long Island. With the loss, Hartford falls to 6-17 overall and 1-5 in conference action as they close out their first trip through the league schedule.
Sophomore Kami Nethersole finished as the only Hartford player with double figure kills, leading the way with 10 total. She also led the team with a .206 hitting percentage with three errors in 34 total attacks. Joining her in leading the way was junior's Sydney Scott and Michelle Cordell who each finished with eight kills.
As a team, Hartford hit under .100 for the match with 37 kills and 26 errors in 119 total attacks. The Hawks best hitting came in the opening set, when they scored a 25-23 win over Stony Brook. In that set, the Hawks hit .379 with 15 kills and four errors in 29 total swings. The Seawolves led both team in the match with a .343 hitting percentage, smacking 51 total kills and suffering just 15 errors in 105 total attempts.
Senior setter Lindsay Ford led the Hawks with 31 assists, while also adding three kills to the team effort. Junior defensive specialist Danielle Etta, despite suffering from an injury, led the team defensively with 13 digs, while Scott added eight and Dionna Kirton contributed seven.
Leading all hitters in the game was the Seawolves Alicia Nelson who finished with 15 kills, while her teammate, Ashley Headen, put down an impressive .750 hitting percentage with 12 kills and no errors in 16 total attacks.
The Hawks and Seawolves will meet once more this weekend, when the Seawolves travel to West Hartford to return in the home-and-home series. The Sunday afternoon matinee is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start.
