WEST HARTFORD, CONN. – Led by three players with double figure kills and an errorless effort from rookie Lindsay Anderson, the University of Hartford volleyball team posted its second-straight home win with a four-set victory over the visiting Stony Brook Seawolves on Sunday. The Hawks improve to 7-17 overall and 2-5 conference play.
Leading the way for the Hawks hitters was Michelle Cordell and Kami Nethersole who each finished with 11 kills. Rounding out the Hawks double figure hitters was rookie Dionna Kirton who finished with 10. Anderson was tied for the match-high in hitting percentage as she led all Hawks with a .667 attached percentage. She finished with eight kills and no errors in 12 total attacks. Nethersole's 11 kills is the fifth-straight match in double figures for the Sophomore.
Cordell and Nethersole each finished with three kills, with Cordell hitting .286 and Nethersole .211. Cordell finished with 28 total attacks, while Nethersole took 38 swings. The Hawks, as a team, finished with a .181 hitting percentage, not hitting over .200 in any of the four sets. The Hawks finished with 52 total kills and 24 errors in 155 total attempts. The Seawolves (8-15 overall, 3-4 America East) led both team in hitting percentage with a .201 effort with 56 kills and 25 errors in 154 total attacks.
Senior setter Lindsay Ford again showed her ability to spread the Hawks offense and keep the opponent off balance. She finished the match with 41 assists, while Cordell added five of the Hawks 50 total assists.
Defensively, a pair of Hawks led the way with starting libero Danielle Etta and Nethersole both finishing with 15 digs. The double digit digs for Nethersole completed her sixth match with a double double. Also contributing a double double effort was Kirton, who finished with 10 digs. The Hawks also finished with a season-high nine blocks as a team, led by Anderson who finished with four.
Leading all hitters in the match was the Seawolves Ashley Headen who finished with 19 kills and a .429 hitting percentage, suffering four errors in 35 total attacks. Also finishing in double figures for the Seawolves was Alicia Nelson who finished with 14 kills.
The win marks the just the second win over the Seawolves since they joined the America East Conference in 2001. The first win came in five sets on October 6, 2002. The win is also the first time since the 2003 season the Hawks have won two conference games and the first time under head coach Don Ferguson.
The Hawks will continue through a four-match home stretch when they welcome the Providence College Friars to the Sports Center on Friday at 6:00 p.m. The match will be the Hawks annual Dig Pink match, in which they will help to raise awareness and will accept donations for Breast Cancer research.
