BURLINGTON, Vt. – The University of Hartford men's soccer team was unable to keep its season alive on Saturday as it fell to the University of Vermont Catamounts, 2-0, in the season finale. With the win, Vermont secured the sixth and final spot in the upcoming 2010 America East tournament while the Hawks miss out on the postseason for the first time in four seasons.
Hartford, who needed a win or a tie on Saturday to extend its season, finishes 2010 with a 5-10-0 overall record and 2-5-0 mark in the America East.
Senior Patrick Alonis' goal in the 28th minute of play proved to be all the Catamounts needed to take home the Senior Day victory. Zach Paul got the offense started for Vermont, firing a shot at Hartford keeper Luke Citriniti. Citriniti made the save, however the deflection landed in front of Alonis who sent the ball into back of the open net to give his squad the 1-0 advantage.
In the 86th minute, Vermont added an insurance goal. On a breakaway, D.J. Edler tested Citriniti who turned away the sophomore's attempt. Classmate Sean Sweeney was there to finish off the rebound of the Hawks' keeper's stop to seal the game at 2-0.
Citriniti closed out the game with six saves while David Ramada turned away three Hartford shots on goal, all coming in the final stanza. Vermont outshot Hartford, 5-2, in the first half however the Hawks turned around to hold a 9-8 shot advantage in the final stanza.
Senior Bojan Delibasic led the Hawks' attack with four shots while classmate Jamie Thomas fired three shots. Hartford did not record a shot on goal in the contest.
Hartford loses three seniors – Delibasic, Sam Groves and Thomas – to graduation. During their four-year tenure in the scarlet and white, the trio amassed a career record of 27-29-13 while helping the team to three-straight appearances in the America East tournament.
