Volleyball Ends Season with Four-set Loss to Binghamton on Sunday

The University of Hartford volleyball team concluded the 2010 season with a four-set (11-25, 17-25, 25-16, 22-25) loss to Binghamton University on Sunday, in the final match of the regular season in the America East Conference. The Hawks close out the season with an 8-21 overall record, including a 3-9 mark in conference play.

The Hawks three conference victories is the most since the 2002 season. Hartford finished sixth out of seven conference teams with Albany, Binghamton, UMBC and Stony Brook all advancing to the 2010 America East championship, which will be hosted by the Great Danes.

Against the Bearcats, Hartford was led by junior outside hitter Michelle Cordell who finished with 14 kills, one of two players to record double figure kills. Joining her was sophomore outside hitter Kami Nethersole with 11 kills. Cordell led the two with a .200 hitting percentage with seven errors in 35 total attacks, while Nethersole finished with six errors in 31 total attacks for a .161 hitting percentage. Nethersole's 11 kills is the ninth-straight match with double figure kills.

Leading the team in hitting percentage was junior Sydney Scott who finished with a .375 effort with nine kills and three errors in 16 total attacks. Freshman Lindsay Anderson also hit well with just one error to go along with four kills in nine total swings for a .333 hitting percentage.

The lone senior on the squad, Lindsay Ford ran the Hawks offense for the final time wearing the scarlet and white. She finished with 37 assists against the Bearcats, closing out her career with 3,456 assists, third most in school history.

Defensively, two Hawks finished with double figure digs, Nethersole and freshman Dionna Kirton, who both compiled 10 total digs. Just behind them was Scott who finished with nine kills. On the block, the Hawks finished with nine total as a team, led by Anderson who put down six blocks and Scott who added five.

As a team, the Hawks finished the match hitting .127 with 44 total kills and 28 errors in 126 total attacks. The Hawks best hitting came in the third set when they scored a 25-16 victory, hitting .345 with just two errors to go along with 12 kills in 29 total swings.

The Bearcats led both teams in hitting with a .209 hitting percentage putting down 50 total kills and suffering 23 errors in 129 total attacks. Leading the Bearcats, and all players in the match, was Michelle McDonough who finished with 17 kills. Anna Lejina finished just shy of that with 16 total kills. The Bearcats also combined for 12 total kills, while Alex Roland led all players with 10 total blocks.
