WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hartford women's tennis team concluded its regular season on Wednesday, falling to Albany, 7-0. Although the Hawks were unable to grab a point from the Great Danes, there were positive signs heading into the conference tournament this weekend in New Haven.
Playing at the top doubles position, freshman
Livia Blasque and sophomore
Margaret Sabatino captivated the gathering at the Hartford Tennis Courts, playing the match of the day against Albany's Livia Gherman and Laine Mackey. The duel went back and forth with neither side able to establish an edge, but the Hawks' top doubles team withstood the pressure and emerged with an 8-6 victory. Although Hartford lost at the other two doubles positions to cede the point, the win from Blasque and Sabatino was the first conference doubles match Hartford had taken - not including withdraws or forfeits - since head coach Michael Raymond took over the squad for the 2007-08 season.
Junior co-captain
Nicole Haynal put together the Hawks' best showing in singles, although they were unable to claim any matches. Haynal grabbed a one-set lead off the bat when she took the first set from Albany's Laine Mackey, 6-4. After dropping the second set at Number Three 6-2, Haynal and Mackey went back and forth in the tiebreak set before Mackey was able to grab an advantage and finish off a hard-fought 10-8 decision.
The top singles player for the Hawks, Blasque could not keep things going after her doubles triumph, falling 6-3, 6-2. The same was true of Sabatino at Number Two, dropping her match 6-0, 6-1.
Amanda Epstein fell at Number Four, 6-0, 6-1, while
Kaitlin Lennon played in the fifth position, falling 6-1, 6-1.
Senior co-captain
Margaret Potkay, playing her final match at the Hartford Tennis Courts, dropped her match at Number Six singles, 6-0, 6-0.
