Volleyball Succumbs to Southern Illinois and Brown on Saturday at the UConn Toyota Classic

The University of Hartford volleyball team fell to 0-7 on the season with a pair of losses on Saturday at the UConn Toyota Classic. The Hawks opened the day with a 3-0 (15-25, 13-25, 12-25) loss to Southern Illinois and then fell to Brown in the afternoon, also in three-sets (27-29, 21-25, 18-25).

Sophomore Kami Nethersole led the Hawks in both matches, finishing with nine kills in the opening match against SIU and then compiling her first double figure kills match of the weekend with 15 against Brown. The 15 kills against Brown set a season-high for the outside hitter and is one shy of her career-high. Nethersole earned her second All-Tournament team honor of the season for her performance throughout the UConn Toyota Classic.

Nethersole led the Hawks in hitting percentage in the Brown match, finished with two errors in 40 total attempts for a .325 hitting percentage. Also hitting well against Brown was Dionna Kirton who finished with seven kills and a .211 hitting percentage (3 errors, 19 total attacks).

Senior setter Lindsay Ford led the Hawks offense through both matches, finishing with 12 assists in the opening match and 28 against the Bears.

Defensively, Danielle Etta led the Hawks in both matches, finishing with eight digs in the first match and adding 14 in the night cap. She led three players who finished with double digit digs in the Brown match with Sydney Scott adding 13 and Nethersole completing her first double double of the season, also with 13 digs.

On the block, four players finished with three blocks over the two matches. Redshirt Freshman Lindsay Swan finished with three blocks in both matches, while Nethersole and Scott both added three in the Brown match.

As a team, the Hawks struggled to hit well against Southern Illinois, finishing with a negative hitting percentage (-.132). They finished with 17 kills and 29 errors in 91 total hits. Against Brown, the Hawks finished with 39 kills and 19 errors in 125 total attacks for a .160 hitting percentage.

The Hawks will return to action with a mid-week match against the Holy Cross Crusaders on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
