Women's Tennis Drops 7-0 Decision to Providence on Friday

The Hartford women's tennis team returned to action suffering their first dual match loss of the year at the hands of the Providence Friars 7-0 on Friday afternoon at the Hartford Tennis Courts. The women's team will return to action on Tuesday when they host the Holy Cross Crusaders. That match is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.

Providence opened the match with a sweep in doubles play. Mari Aviles and Maria Bernulez took home an 8-2 victory at first singles over the Hawks Abby Liu and Katina Zampas. At second doubles, the Hawks pair of Ashley Harel and Jessica Galik were shut out by their competition, Karen Ramirez and Caitlin Foley. Rounding out the doubles action was Emily Willhoft and Christie Greenberg who dropped their match by an 8-3 final to Caitlin Foley and Taylor Corler.

Liu put up a battle in her first set against Aviles at the number one singles position. The singles loss to Liu is her first of the season in dual match play. Liu dropped her first set by a 6-4 decision, and the suffered a 6-1 final in the second set.

Harel and Zampas also battled to the end for Hartford at the second and third singles positions, respectively. Harel dropped her singles decision to Bernulez by straight sets of 6-2, while Zampas fell at third singles by straight sets to 6-3 to Ramirez.

 In fourth singles, Galik put up a battle in her first set, falling 6-3, before being blanked in the final set 6-0 by Corler. Ahlborn picked up the fifth singles victory for the Friars defeating Willhoft by scores of 6-0, 6-1. The final singles match between Greenberg and Foley was decided by scores of 6-1, 6-0 in favor of the visiting team.
