STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The University of Hartford men's soccer team closed out the 2011 regular season with a 3-1 defeat of the Stony Brook Seawolves on Sunday evening. The Hawks will enter the upcoming America East Championship as the fifth seed and will play at No. 4 UMBC on Saturday, November 5 at 7:00 p.m.
Sophomore David Bernhardsson and rookies Connor Yeaney and Atobra Ampadu each scored for the Hawks with Yeaney's marker in the 42nd minute going down as the game-winner. Bernhardsson finished the match with four points and had a share in all three of his team's goals to lead the Hawks to their third-straight league win.
Hartford closed out the regular season with a mark of 6-8-4 (3-2-2 AE) while Stony Brook, which earned the second seed in the America East tournament, finished at 8-6-3 overall with a 4-2-1 record in league play.
Stony Brook outshot Hartford, 22-14, and had nine shots on goal to Hartford's six however it was the Hawks who converted and found the back of the net. Bernhardsson got the scoring going in the 27th minute when he headed in a cross from freshman Mathias Axelsson to put the Hawks ahead early at 1-0.
In the 42nd minute, Bernhardsson provided the pass that would give the Hawks a 2-0 advantage going into the halftime break. The striker booted a corner kick into the box, finding Yeaney who put the finishing touches on the play and punched-in the eventual game deciding tally from just one yard away.
Out of the intermission, Hartford sealed the game in the 56th minute as Ampadu found the back of the net for the third time this season to push the score to 3-0 in favor of the Hawks. Bernhardsson again had a part in the goal scoring when a hard kick was sent his way and he deflected it to Ampadu who was wide open in front of the goal. With a chip shot over Seawolves' keeper Stefan Manz, Ampadu put the game out of reach.
Less than three minutes later, Stony Brook's Leonardo Fernandes converted on a free kick from 23 yards out, beating Hartford goaltender Matt McElroy with a shot that was tucked away to the right corner of the net.
McElroy, who relieved Luke Citriniti after an early injury, rejected a career-high eight Stony Brook shots to keep the home team at bay. Manz, his counterpart, made three saves on the match.
