Nethersole Puts Down 20 Kills as Hawks Fall to Stony Brook 3-2 on Sunday

West Hartford, Conn. – For the fourth time in as many league matches the Hartford Hawks volleyball team has gone to a fifth set before deciding a victory, this time in favor of the Stony Brook Seawolves on Sunday at the Reich Family Pavilion. Along with the on court action, the Hawks (10-11, 1-3 AE) celebrated their annual Dig Pink match, helping to raise awareness and funding for Breast Cancer Research.

The squads seesawed victories for the first four sets (25-21, 12-25, 25-22, 23-25) with the home team winning the second and fourth sets. In the deciding set, the Hawks trailed by as much as 6-3 before battling back to tie the score at 10 on a kill from junior outside hitter Kami Nethersole. Back to back kills from (Kami) Nethersole gave the Hawks a one point advantage, but the teams would end up tied five more times before the Seawolves pulled out an 18-16 victory.

Overall for the match, (Kami) Nethersole led four players with double figures on the offensive side, finishing with 20 kills and her second straight match with at least 20 kills. Joining her in leading the team was Sareeta Nethersole who finished with 14, Lindsay Anderson who finished with 13 and Dionna Kirton who finished with 10. As a team, the Hawks outhit Stony Brook finishing the match with a .246 attack percentage with 68 total kills and 22 errors in 187 swings. The Seawolves finished with match with 72 kills and 33 errors in 186 total attacks for a .210 hitting average.

Individually, the Hawks hitters were paced by Anderson who hit into just one error in her 29 total attacks for a .414 hitting percentage. (Sareeta) Nethersole finished with a.333 hitting average with two total errors in 36 swings, while her sister Kami finished with a .279 average in hitting with three errors in 61 total attacks.

For the second straight match the Hawks setter, Jackie Tamburri, led the team on the defensive end of the floor with 17 digs to go along with her 51 assists. She led four players in the match with double figure digs. Joining her was (Sareeta) Nethersole with 16, Kirton with 11 and the Hawks libero Danielle Etta who finished with 11. The Hawks also led both teams in total blocks with 11, led by Anderson who combined for six total blocks, two solo and four block assists.

The Hawks will return to action with back-to-back home matches next weekend when Albany and Binghamton invade the Reich Family Pavilion. The Great Danes will be the first in town on Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. with the Bearcats scheduled to visit West Hartford on Sunday for a 2:00 p.m. start.
