Albany, N.Y. – The Hartford volleyball season came to a close on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 3-0 decision on the road at Albany in the regular season finale. The Hawks were led by rookie hitter Sareeta Nethersole who finished with 13 kills, the only Hawk in double figures. The Hawks close 2011 with a 12-18 overall record and a 3-9 mark in league play.
The highlight of the day for Hartford came from another rookie, Jackie Tamburri who set a single season, since the start of rally scoring, record for assists with 1,217 total in her freshman campaign. Tamburri entered the match needing just six to pass Danielle Scoggin who previously held the top spot with 1,194 assists in 2002. Tamburri finished the final match of the season with 29 assists, while adding two kills and five digs.
Nethersole's 13 kills proved to be the most among all players in the match, while she finished the day hitting .184 with six errors in 38 total attacks. Senior Michelle Cordell finished second overall for the Hawks hitters with seven kills, while the team as a whole struggled through the match hitting just .139 with 34 kills and 19 errors in 108 total attacks.
The Great Danes (19-8, 11-1 AE), who will enter the 2011 America East Championship as the top seed and will host the league tournament, finished the match hitting .237 with 36 kills and 14 errors in 93 total swings. Casey Wright led the Great Danes with 10 kills, the only player for Albany in double digits.
Defensively, Hartford was led by Cordell who was the only player in the match to record double figure kills with 13 digs. Following Cordell was Saara Carissimi who finished with seven, while Nethersole added six and Tamburri chipped in with five.
