Volleyball Falls in Four Sets at Stony Brook on Friday Night

Sisters Kami Nethersole, junior, and Sareeta Nethersole, freshman, led the Hawks a four set loss at Stony Brook on Friday night in the Hawks first action in seven days. Hartford falls to 12-15 overall and 3-6 in America East action while the Seawolves improve to 13-11 overall and 6-4 in league play.

The visitors took an early lead in the match, winning the first set by a 25-21 score. The Hawks finished with a match-high 14 kills in the first set, while holding the Seawolves to its match-low for a single game of .135 with 13 kills and eight errors. Stony Brook would rebounds, hitting .300 or higher in the three remaining sets, scoring the comeback victory with scores of 25-19, 25-13 and 25-16.

The Nethersole sisters combined to finish with 22 kills and were the only two Hawks with double figures in the offensive category. [Kami] Nethersole led the team with 12 kills while [Sareeta] Nethersole finished with 10. Among the two, the younger led the way in overall hitting with a .333 average suffering just two errors in 24 total swings. Fellow rookie Jackie Tamburri led the team in hitting percentage with four kills and no errors in seven total attacks for a .571 average.

Also among the leading hitters was sophomore Lindsay Anderson who finished with nine kills, while hitting .294 for the match with four errors in 17 total attempts. Taylor McCreery, also a sophomore, finished with six kills for the road team. Tamburri would lead the way with 32 assists, which brings her season total to 1,102. The rookie needs just 92 to pass Danielle Scoggin who holds the single season record since the start of rally scoring for assists with 1,194 in 2002. With her 32 assists against the Seawolves, Tamburri passed Brianne Paulson who finished with 1,089 assists in 2003 taking over the second spot in the rankings.

Tamburri also led the Hawks defensive efforts, finishing with 14 digs, which led all players in the match. She was one of two players to finish with double figure digs with senior libero Danielle Etta adding 10. [Kami] Nethersole and Anderson led the Hawks blocking efforts with three total blocks each.

Hartford returns to action on Sunday when they travel to UMBC. The Hawks and Retrievers are scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start.
