Hawks Hitting Struggles in Four Set Loss at UMBC on Sunday

The Hartford volleyball team dropped its second-straight match by four sets on Sunday afternoon at UMBC. Junior outside hitter Kami Nethersole led the Hawks with 17 kills, one of two Hawks to finish in double figures. Hartford falls to 3-7 in America East action and is now 12-16 overall.

Overall, the Hawks hitting struggled to find consistency, hitting just .156 as a team with 49 kills and 21 errors in 179 total attacks. Sophomore Taylor McCreery joined Nethersole in double figures in the hitting column with 11 kills, while leading the way with a .194 hitting average among her and Nethersole. McCreery finished with five errors in 31 total attacks. Nethersole finished with a .177 average, suffering six errors while taking 62 total swings. Also among the leading hitters was Michelle Cordell with eight and Sareeta Nethersole with six.

The Retrievers led both teams in hitting with a .222 average led by three players in double figures. Overall, the home squad combined for 64 kills and 23 errors in 185 total attacks. Dalton Toliver led all players with 17 kills and led all players in the match with a .389 hitting average (three errors in 36 total attacks). Iman Kennedy and Ali Lynachan each finished in double figures with 12 and 11, respectively, while Hannah Schmidt finished just shy of double figures with nine.

Tamburri ran the Hawks offense as the lone setter, finishing with 36 assists. She now has 1,134 assists this season, 60 shy of tying Danielle Scoggin for the single season record for assists since the start of rally scoring. Scoggin finished the 2002 season with 1,194 assists. Tamburri is currently second overall, passing Brianne Paulson who finished with 1,089 in 2003.

Defensively, the Hawks were led by their senior libero, Danielle Etta, who finished with a match-best 26 digs. She was one of three players who finished with double figures on the defensive side of the ball. Joining her was [Sareeta] Nethersole who finished with 18 and Tamburri who finished with 15, her 18th double double of the season. Cordell finished the match with a team-high four blocks, one solo block and three block assists.

The Hawks will play the final two matches of the regular season next weekend when they travel to Binghamton and Albany. The first will be a Friday night match-up at Binghamton (7:00 p.m.) before closing out the regular season at Albany on Sunday (2:00 p.m.). The Hawks remain in the hunt for one of four spots in the upcoming America East Championship, which will be held at the home of the highest seeded team.
