Men's Golf Opens Spring Slate at Arizona Intercollegiate

TUCSON, Ariz. -
The Hartford men's golf team ended a three-month lay-off earlier this week when they competed at the University of Arizona Intercollegiate, held at Arizona National Golf Course in Tucson, Arizona. The Hawks finished 16th overall, with junior Matt Smith pacing the team with an 18-over par 231, good for a tie for 54th place overall.

As a team, the Hawks fired a 973 in the three-round event, finishing 121-over par overall. San Diego State claimed the championship with a team score of 859, seven over par. Pepperdine's Andrew Putnam was the individual champion with a seven-under 206 for the tournament.

Smith led the Hawks with his 78-76-77--231. His card posted three of the Hawks' five total rounds under 80, with his second-round 76 standing as the team's best single round of the tournament. D.J. Lantz was next for the Hawks, firing a 78-82-78--238, good for 81st place.

Robert Gibbons finished 88th, while Sean Ko tied for 90th overall. Patrick Ross also competed for the Hawks, finishing 92nd.

Hartford will have another month-and-a-half off, before returning to action March 14 at the Triumph at Pauma Valley in Pauma Valley, California. Last season, Hartford finished seventh in that event. Mike DiMeglio was the only current Hawk to participate in the tournament, coming in 54th with a three-round combined total of 245.
