BOX SCORE
ALBANY, N.Y. - Playing without its top singles player, the Hartford women's tennis team concluded its regular season on Tuesday, falling at Albany, 7-0. The loss left the Hawks with five dual match victories this season, the most in the tenure of head coach Michael Raymond.
Hartford was without the services of freshman
Katina Zampas, who has played the majority of this season at the No. 1 position on Hartford's ladder. She was forced to the sidelines due to illness, and Raymond had to juggle the Hawks' lineup as a result. Junior
Maggie Sabatino moved up a spot from her customary No. 2 singles position to the top line, while also pairing with senior
Nicole Haynal rather than Zampas at No. 1 doubles.
The Great Danes earned the doubles point by sweeping all three matches to get the action underway. Sabatino and Haynal fell by an 8-4 count at No. 1 doubles, while
Kaitlin Lennon and
Haley Gileau were whitewashed, 8-0.
Ashley Harel and
Emily Willhoft were defeated at No. 3 doubles, 8-2.
In singles, Sabatino was knocked off 6-1, 6-2 at the top position. Harel, moved up to the No. 2 position, fell 6-1, 6-0.
Playing at No. 3 singles, Haynal dropped her first set 6-1, then battled before falling 6-3 in the second set, the most games won by a Hawk during any set on Tuesday afternoon. Lennon and Gileau fell by 6-1, 6-1 counts at No. 4 and 5 singles, while Willhoft was defeated 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
The Hawks will be back on the courts on April 29 when they open play at the America East Championships. The event will be held at Yale University in New Haven, with a champion crowned on Sunday, May 1. Hartford's schedule in the tournament has yet to be announced.
