Women's Tennis Wraps Up Play at the America East Championships

QUARTERFINAL BOX SCORE vs STONY BROOK
FIFTH PLACE MATCH vs. ALBANY

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -
The Hartford women's tennis team's quest for a championship came to an end on Friday afternoon as they fell to Stony Brook in the America East quarterfinals, 4-0. The third-seeded Seawolves swept the doubles point and took the first three singles matches to wrap up, clinching the match. Hartford, seeded sixth, then concluded its season on Saturday when it fell to Albany in the fifth-place match, 7-0.

Stony Brook grabbed the early advantage when they swept all three doubles matches. Returning from an illness which held her out of the regular-season finale at Albany, Katina Zampas paired with Maggie Sabatino at the top doubles spot, falling 8-2. Nicole Haynal and Haley Gileau also dropped an 8-2 decision at No. 2 doubles, while Kaitlin Lennon and Emily Willhoft were defeated 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.

As is the case throughout the regular season, matches are played in a best-of-seven point format. However, during America East Championship bracket play, once one team reaches four points the match is halted. Stony Brook quickly got victories at Nos. 3, 4 and 6 singles, giving them a 4-0 advantage and ending the match. Haynal fell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3, while Lennon and Willhoft were each defeated 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively.

Playing at No. 5 singles, Gileau was trailling 6-0, 4-2 when play was halted in the match. Sabatino at No. 1 singles and Ashley Harel at No. 2 were each trailing 6-0, 4-0.

On Saturday, the Hawks returned to the court for a final time in 2011 as they took on Albany in the fifth-place match. The only women's match on the courts at the time, that contest went the full seven points as the Great Danes defeated the Hawks, 7-0.

Zampas and Sabatino put up the best showing for the Hawks in doubles, falling at the top spot by an 8-5 count. Haynal and Gileau were defeated 8-3 at No. 2, while Lennon and Willhoft dropped an 8-1 decision at No. 3.

In singles play, Zampas concluded her freshman season with yet another appearance at the top of Hartford's lineup, falling in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. The scores were reversed for No. 2 Sabatino, whose season came to an end with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat.

Harel dropped the match at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-1, while senior co-captain Nicole Haynal wrapped up her Hartford career with a 6-1, 6-0 defeat at No. 4.

Playing in the fifth position, Lennon dropped a 6-0, 6-2 match. Willhoft rounded out the Hartford lineup, falling by a 6-2, 6-1 decision.
