BOX SCORE vs. ST. FRANCIS (PA)
Philadelphia, Pa. – The Hartford volleyball team (9-7 overall) closed out its 2011 tournament play with a pair of 3-0 victories over Lafayette and St. Francis (PA) at the Lehigh/Lafayette Cross Town Tournament in Philadelphia. Junior Kami Nethersole led the Hawks through both matches with 18 kills against Lafayette and 10 against the Red Flash. Nethersole and freshman Jackie Tamburri closed out the weekend with All-Tournament honors.
Nethersole and Tamburri's All-Tournament honor is the third time this season the pair has been honored together, while Nethersole's is the fourth time this season she has received honors after a weekend of competition. Nethersole's 45 total kills on the weekend is the second most by all players at the tournament and her 4.09 kills-per-set over the Hawks 11 sets is the highest average among all hitters at the two-day event.
In the opening match, the Hawks flew to a three-set (25-21, 25-16, 25-19) victory over the host Lafayette Leopards. Nethersole's 10th double double of the season, and third straight, led the Hawks. She finished with 18 kills, and a career-high 21 digs, while hitting a match- and career-high .533 average. She hit into just two errors in 30 total attacks.
Nethersole was the only Hawks to hit in double figures with Michelle Cordell finishing with nine kills and Sareeta Nethersole adding eight. As a team, the Hawks finished the match hitting .269 with 49 total kills and 17 errors in 199 total swings. Defensively, the Leopards were held to a .132 hitting average with 30 kills and 16 errors in 106 total attacks.
Kami Nethersole led all defensive efforts with her 21 digs, while joining her sister Sareeta Nethersole (13) and rookie setter Tamburri (10) in double figures. Tamburri finished the match with 37 assists, completing her 10th double double. Cordell led the Hawks blocking efforts with three total, while Sareeta Nethersole and Lindsay Anderson each added two.
In the second match of the day, the Hawks again cruised to a 3-0 victory (25-18, 25-17, 25-13), defeating the St. Francis Red Flash from the Northeast Conference. Kami Nethersole's 10 kills led all players in the game as the only hitter in double figures. Cordell and Anderson finished second and third on the Hawks team with seven and six kills, respectively.
As a team, the Hawks finished the match hitting .317 with 39 kills and 17 errors in 82 total attacks. Anderson led the team with a .500 effort with one error in 10 swings, while Cordell finished with two errors in 13 total attempts (.385). Kami Nethersole also finished with just three errors in 24 total attacks for a .292 average.
Defensively, the Hawks held St. Francis to a .120 hitting match with 24 kills and 14 errors in 83 total attacks. Cordell finished the game with 14 digs, the only player to finish with double figures on the defensive end. Tamburri finished the final match of the weekend with 31 assists, out of the Hawks 35 total as a team.
Hartford will next play on Saturday, September 24 when they welcome New Hampshire to West Hartford for the 2011 America East opener. The Hawks and Wildcats will begin the league season at 4:00 p.m. at the Reich Family Pavilion.
