Rookie Sareeta Nethersole's 12 Kills Led the Hawks to their First Home Victory 3-0 Over Holy Cross

The University of Hartford volleyball team (3-5 overall) soared to its first home victory of the 2011 season with a 3-0 shutout of Holy Cross on Wednesday night at the Reich Family Pavilion. The Hawks were led by rookie Sareeta Nethersole who finished with a match-high and career-high 12 kills and a .429 hitting percentage.

Joining her in putting down double figure kills was junior Kami Nethersole and senior Lindsay Makowicki who each finished with 10. Sareeta's .429 hitting percentage led all three leading hitters, however none of the trio finished lower than a .222 hitting percentage. Sareeta finished with three errors in 21 total attacks. Her sister, Kami, finished with four errors in 27 total attempts for a .222 hitting percentage, while Makowicki finished with a .333 hitting percentage, after opening the match with an errorless first set (three kills in four attempts).

As a team, the Hawks saw their season high hitting percentage. They finished with 50 total kills, while holding the opposition to just 19 on the night. Overall, the Hawks suffered 20 total errors in 103 total attacks for a .291 hitting percentage. Also hitting well for the Hawks was senior Michelle Cordell who finished one kill shy of a double figure night, while enduring just two errors in 17 total attempts for a .412 hitting average.

Freshman Jackie Tamburri finished the night with her sixth double double, in eight total matches, with 37 kills and 12 digs. Her 12 digs led the team defensively, while Kami also finished with a double double adding 11 digs. Her double double was the fifth of the season for the Cortlandt Manor native.

The Hawks will next play on Friday when they open up the Hartford/Quinnipiac Invitational with a 4:00 p.m. match against the Navy Midshipmen. The Hawks will then host Delaware State (11:00 a.m.) and La Salle (7:00 p.m.) on Saturday before closing out the three-day event with Quinnipiac on Sunday (1:00 p.m.).
